Microsoft announced today that the second Xbox will launch in two flavors:

-One with just the system, cables and a wired controller - for $299USD
-One with the system, cables, wireless controller, remote, ethernet cable, headset and 20GB HDD - for $399USD

Yes, you heard that correctly. The base model does not include the measly 20GB HDD.

Add to the fact that Microsoft wants to add HD-DVD drives to later models - and you've got:

    Ultimate Consumer Confusion / Hell

Well, looks like I'm not getting a new Xbox for a few years. At least until Halo 3 comes out...

What's awesome is - without those features - the console becomes somewhat useless unless you're just a casual gamer. And really - what kind of casual gamer buys a $300 console?

Hopefully, somebody finds a way to mod that stupid looking console by creating a HDD case similar to the official one.

I guess they've finally done it: a console generation where I have zero interest in any of the products...

    Bravo. Bravo.

Sounds about right for Microsoft, though. Why make one good product when you can make mutliple crappy ones that require the other to function decently? Instead of simply improving their existing product with better processor, more RAM, faster GFX, they completely screw it over. I hear we will prolly have to expect this same garbage from Sony, as well.

Maybe Nintendo's new system will turn out to be worth looking into. Until then, I will be purchasing my second Gamecube in a few weeks. I really miss Rogue Squadron.... ;)

Yea its been coming for a while. I dont understand why, but then why is Windows XP so ****e. Its a small HDD to (laptop one?) so no easy upgrade. I'll be trying my best to put a decent sized HDD in it. It is so much easier when you dont have to carry discs around.

They've pretty much hinted at having two (or more) versions right from the start.
Even suggesting as much as to say that the 360 wouldn't have a harddisk at all.

I wouldn't worry about HD-DVD (or Blueray for that matter).
DVD's are still plentiful and the industry has tried the idea before (SACD vs DVD-Audio) and it failed.

As for 20 Gb ... the 6 Gb (or whatever) on my Xbox is still empty. Even my hdd-based mp3-player only has 15 of its 20 Gb disc filled. The real question is what the cost of those 'extra' harddisk-extensions is going to be like and what sizes they're going to sell.

I'm sure your mommy will buy you the $400 one, crac

JAFO, SACDs failed? Wtf? No, they didn't fail, they're rapidly gaining popularity. And I believe the hype over the harddrive on the xbox was that many gamers with too much time on their hands actually copy their game collection to the harddrive, eliminating the need to change disks.

Not just eliminating discs but the increase in speed is unbelviable, GTA:SA is shocking without being on the hdd. It must cut most load times in by a good quarter.

The HDD should have been in there as standard, removing it was a real stupid move. Now games wont be expected to take advantage of it (or will they?).
Let just hope the TRC's (or whatever Microsoft call there tech requirements) require games to make use of a HDD if it is available....

One thing is for sure: First person shooters will still suck on consoles.

The HD was rumored to be needed for the Original Xbox compatibility, needed for additionnal downloadable content and for that _Multimedia Home Center_ ****. Which means it's pretty much useless for people that just want to play games which is the point of a console despite the marketing monster about _Multimedia Home Center_.

I was under the impression that all games are required to make use of the HDD if it is available. At least, that's what I recall from a recent Game Informer article.

Nobody ever said '1337 linux haxors' had to be well-spoken.

While I second Derelan's nomination for 'idiot of the week' - a title that should be renewed on a weekly basis - I figured I'd do a little more than flame, or point out the fact that what he mentioned about the HD 'hype' was unintelligible...

    SACDs 'rapidly gaining popularity' eh?

Yes...let's just all sit down and think about that statement for a second...

Also, 'hard drive' is two words.

    Fancy that.

Except for 'Halo' - which is actually better on the Xbox than it is the PC.

I found Doom 3 to be more enjoyable on the Xbox as well - but really - that doesn't say much. That game was just plain awful.

Solely because the PC port of Halo sucked.

I was also under the impression that a HD would be needed for patches and such. Can you imagine getting your favourite game and not being able to play online because you can't install the latest patch?

Also - because the Xbox controller made that game such a dream to play...

And about the not being able to patch games?

Yes. Yes, I can imagine that. It's called 'KoTOR' for the Xbox.

How about savegames if you don't have hd? Memcards?? That would be cumbersome...

The Xbox controller also made an excellent paperweight, too.
