Hi Guys doing a dissertation on level design and would like your thoughts of what you enjoy in a map

What's your favourite map in UT:
What's your favourite game type (capture the flag, team deathmatch etc):
What's your favourite map style (space, aztec, egyptian):
Perfect amount of players:
Confined space or outdoors environment:
Any special that you think makes a great map:

Any help and advice would be appreciated

(Dunno if this is the right place to put this thread sorry)

Most likely DM-Morbias. It's got the best layout for one-on-one's IMO and it makes such a good test lab for mods. But it will even do nicely if you want a really chaotic match with a lot of players/monsters in a confined space. Seriously. That map makes me hard.

Deathmatch and variants of it, hands down. You can do a lot with it.

Honestly, I can't say I really have a fave style. I love maps of all kinds from Egyptian to space station.

Around 5 or so.

Confined space pl0x. I hate getting sniped.

Deck 16 comes in a close second. Another indispensable map for testing mods out. It's much more equipped for it than Morbias, weapon and item wise. Problem is, a one-on-one match isn't as good on Deck 16 as it is on Morbias and it won't get as out of control as it does in Morbias if you got a whole lot players/monsters which is both a pro and a con for me.

as far as original ut , and the others, i am a ctf enthusiast. in ut99 ctf-coret, scandinavium, anfractuous. tight spaces. i play instagib, and open spaces are just snipy zones. it's a lot more fun to play online with people than bots. i guess you would say space, though you are in a tight space, not out and about, just see space from tiny portals
ideas: first it should be uncluttered, nothing in your way just for the sake of being in your way. great care should be paid to player running times and where the respawn points are are critical. if you get killed on your side of the map, you should have at least a 50% chance of catching up to the enemy flag carrier. put the spawn points there and ut has a built in humor system somewhere that favors your chances of getting lucky.
8 is a good number (4x4) for most maps, 10 works with some but over 10 is usually aweful
as far as dm goes, turbine was the blueprint. absolute perfect layout and pick up placement. no matter where you were, there was a way out, no mater what you wanted you took risks to get it. i never liked the "oh here's a weapon in your path and 2 pickups just laying next to it" no skill at all in preserving your ammo and schlepping to where your next pick up lays

Oh yes. Honorable mention goes to DM-Fractal for the music, environment and the awesome interactive trap. Only problem is, I think it's a bit too confined.

What's your favourite map in UT:

DOM-Condemned,DOM-Cidom ...

What's your favourite game type (capture the flag, team deathmatch etc):

Capture the flag and Domination.
Just fraggin' in deathmatch isn't always that fun.

What's your favourite map style (space, aztec, egyptian):

I like urban themed maps.

Perfect amount of players:

I think it's best if there is 5 to 10 players (or bots).

Confined space or outdoors environment:

Confined space (hardware ... related reasons)
Or ... both of those at same time, but well balanced.

Any special that you think makes a great map.

In my case,it's related to overall feeling you have when you play the map.
I say this because some of my favorite maps have nothing in common.

:D

A dissertation? How many pages does it have to be?

Are you surveying people who play other FPS games as well?

Sorry if my response is a bit late, there isn't a page limit but I expect abut 60-80, wording of 15-20k plus documentation over design stages. Really just want a bit of people opinions of their favourite maps to collect and collaborate.
