    Yea I havent had chance to read the new one (3) as I have been saving for a huge (£150) order on amazon when the 'Curse of Lono' comes out. Mind you I do hate to pay £30 for a paper back but HST is worth it.

    It just basically says how things go on with or without you, lets us all know how insignificant we all are in the bigger picture...no matter how much of a splash you made...like twain.

    Why are we insignificant? People always say that, but why it must be the case?

    We are not. Just in the huge ten thousand foot level. You know, thge earth moves, the stars are there that kind of thing. For me Reagan said it best..."some people wonder if they ever made a difference in the world...the United States Marines dont have that problem" I know it and live it daily. Ive seen all the good and bad from war (after 7 combat action ribbons I should hope so) Ive seen guys as dumbd as 2 planks of wood and in 45 seconds of exquisite bravery elevate themselves to a whole nother level. But in the end whats it all worth. How much are my scares that I carry worth. Bones heal, pain is temporary, glory is forever...(sorry couldnt resist)
    We are all nothing in the end...we try.

    Psych, how good are you at physics? Imagine million years of actions all leading to chain reactions causing you to be here now. Personally, I don't even believe in choice. It's just a reaction just like the rest. Seeing the world as that, people become really insignificant :)

    Yes a few years back I had planned to join the marines, but erm, I dont know how to put this without sounding arrogant, but I realized I am more intelligent then most... Now I feel its my responsibility to use that gift to aid my fellow man, and hence I am now signing up for school for Neuroscience, or possibly Anthropology, and of course grammar :p Yes believe it or not NTKB is now becomming more and more a Humanist. ;)

    BTW, you are only as significant as others wish to percieve you. Since we all make our own paradigms, we can fool ourselves to think we are important, or worthless, but the true measure of such is how all other paradigms view you, societys paradigm.

    @U/D/T/SNAKE:
    Your job is something more special than most others.
    They was a time I thought about military. But I fear to much beeing a toy of politics and I think I never was patriotic enough.

    @Rostam:
    Choice is more little than you sometimes think it is (I hate genetics :mad: ), but choice is always a door near you. It's kinda your choice to use choice :D, or be a genetic machine.

    Well the depth of the universe as much as it does impress me, what really it offers? Change, diference and 'evolution' is a scratch on the surface.

    As people said to Buddha: 'You know the truth of the world, tell us'. He answered: 'What you will find out there is dust as you do find it here'. The universe is a trick to the eye.

    Universe is not bigger than me, it is just room with stuff in there, I don't feel little, I only fear not to know much about it. Thats why I always wanted to be a physicist (or whatever it is pronounced), but seems I´m to stupid (I hate genetics :mad: :mad: ).

    Marines are fuggen psychotic killing machines who have no idea what "fire control" means. I spoke to six guys fresh out of Iraq and when I asked them what the hardest part of being in Iraq was, they all said "Marines shooting in the wrong f-ing direction."

    Rangers all the way.

    Uhm...that was wrong, but then you explained why it was wrong. It should read "You are only as significant as your percieve yourself". Since the way we percieve the world and how we see others percieving us is run through our minds and subconcious, which are nothing more than filters. For example you said...

    Therefore, your self-perception (the only one that matters to you, or at least your NTKB alias) is that you are smart. That is not necessarily the opinion of how others see you, but because you "realized" it, it certainly seems to be how you percieve others to see you.

    Well, you can look at it a few ways. Positivism says that you are the sum total of your life experiences, enviroment, genetics (although only in a minor respect), etc. Spiritualism would say either the same thing, or something completely different, depending on...well...your life experiences, enviroment, genetics, etc.

    Honestly, we could never come close to comprehending the meaning, nor the entire scope of the observable universe; much less the universe as a whole. And saying you're stupid isn't exactly going to help you become a physicist. As a human, you can do anything you want withing the boundaries of human limitation. I mean, look at what Bruce Lee did with his body, or Stephen Hawking did with his mind. The only thing that lets us get to these places is conviction. Now, you mentioned Fight Club earlier. One of the core themes of this movie was that "with conviction, you can do anything." Actually, all of Chuck Palahniuk's novels are just plays on this same concept. Like in Choke, there is one character who is a hopeless chronic masturbator who turns into a chisled, strong behemoth of a man by the end of the book.

    Also, never blame genetics unless you're physically screwed up. It only acts as a crutch.

    There are a lot of theories, some even unsupported by facts (making them fairy tales), that explain what makes an individual the person that he or she is. Interesting enough, the exact same people would react the exact same way in the exact same situation. So where exactly does choice show up? All I see is a bunch of factors that nobody really can control.

    Psych 101...

    Well, we have nothing but theories, since the brains' function is still relatively unknown. And saying that there are 'unsupported theories' is sort of a misnomer. A theory is something supported by known facts that has been tested and proven true through continued experiments. Therefore, you have to modify your position of "theories" to a more scientific scrutiny, rather than saying any dimwit with an opinion has a 'theory'.

    Also, choice is still a decision. It's not out of our control, but it is affected by who we are. Like, "should I take a blue pen or a black pen to school today?" Well, your fondness of either black or blue is affected by who you are, not necessarily predetermined.

    Physics 101...

    The exact same people never exist in the exact same situation. It's a physical impossibility. Law of entropy. Therefore, choice is always a variable in a constant existance.

    Philosophy 101...

    If "choice" didn't exist, why would be have a word for it? If true, why aren't we all fatists?

    No. You are only as significant as others see you. There was a man named John Doe, who lived 200 years ago. No one knows him anymore because no one needed to remember him, hence he was insignificant to the general population. There was another man named Socrates who lived 2300+ years ago, who is well known, and of great significance to society. Not because he thought he was, but because others thought he was. Lets look at two parrallel examples, one which is real and one made up. In the fake one, Einstein came up with the theory of relativity and kept it to himself. He dies later in life, never revealing his theory. How significant is he to the collective conciousness? 0. Does anyone remember his name? No. Now, in the real scenario, we know the outcome, and Einstein to this day, even beyond death, is significant to all of us who are intelligent thinkers.

    I realized I was intelligent not because of my own thoughts, but because everyone around me kept telling me that until I could only conclude that I was intelligent. I also thought I was ugly growing up, because I was so shy and never approached girls. Once I got the courage, I rapidly realized that many girls found me attractive, and that when I looked back at it, I was never called ugly. I was called fat many times when I was overweight, but never ugly. Its an arrogant and egotistical thing to think our significance only lies in our own minds... Look at the big picture please.

    EDIT: NTKB: No. You are wrong. And I think you should seek professional help if you truely believe that.
    EDIT: Psychomorph: You are also wrong.
    EDIT: Both of you pick up any textbook on communication or psychology and read it. Until that time comes, you are both henceforth ignored for the remainder of this thread.

    "Yeah. Totally gay."

    Being gay is somethnig you are or are not. Intelligence and looks aren't quite as easy to determine.
