A friend of mine reciently got his hands on a Taurus PT92.

Basicaly the PT92 is a Baretta 92F. If I have the story right, Taurus built some Baretta 92f's in a plant in Brazil, but then for some reason lost the contract with Baretta, but they were allowed to continue making the weapon through a deal with Baretta (kind of a licensing deal I'd guess)

Anyway, the Taurus is less expensive then the Barretta. So I was wondering if any of you firearms experts out there (read: Gryphon) know if there is any quality difference between these two guns

I've heard a lot of people bash Taurus' product as being unreliable junk. I have yet to see evidence of this. Basically, Taurus manufactures Smith & Wesson revolvers and Beretta semiautos. They may not be quite as nice as the real steel in terms of finish and overall workmanship, but they're certainly not junk by any stretch of the imagination. I own a Model 689 .357 Magnum and couldn't be more pleased with it.

Besides, all Taurus guns have a LIFETIME warranty, regardless of who owns it. Gotta love that.

fuck it, the name is BERETTA!!!!!

BTW, the main difference between the Taurus and the 92 is the safety lever or so.
Vector from South Africa produces another copy, which looks exactly the same except for the hammer, which is shaped like the one of the 1911.

Taurus is not under license to Beretta, but they are using Beretta's old machinery.

Taurus is good because (a) they actively support the NRA with every gun you buy from them and (b) they provide an alternative to Smith & Wesson if you want a snubnose .357. And you don't want to buy a Smith & Wesson, now do you?

I bought a Beretta 92FS rather than a Taurus because the fit and finish was nicer, and for about $100 more I got the `real thing' (with a real resale value). If I had to start my gun collection over, however, I wouldn't buy any 9mm handgun. It's just too small a round. A Kimber Classic Target .45 also has the smooth-as-silk slide action I liked in the 92FS, but with a decent *bang* to go with it.

Not only don't I wan't a S&W, I don't want a snubnose 357 /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I haven't held the Baretta, but the Taurus looked like a well made gun to me (not an expert though).

I'm currently in the market for a handgun, and am looking seriously at the HK USP45, or one of a number of 1911 variations. But I'm pretty sure I want to go with the .45 (and really I'm leaning toward a 1911, just because they're so customizable)

Secretly I'd dig an FN FiveseveN, but that's not a realistic choice, cause I don't think you can get one with a small clip and I'm not a cop (Plus I wonder how hard the 5.7mm ammo is to find).

Of course a Desert Eagle 50 would be fun, but only if you got robbed. Then you could pull the Crocadile Dundee "That's not a gun; THIS is a gun" line. (Then promptly get shot by some punkass with a .25 while you're trying to draw and fire a half-ton handgun... so nevermind)

I used to rock and roll all night and party every day. Then it was every other day. Now I'm lucky if I can find half an hour a week in which to get funky.

I suggest you take a look at that Kimber I mentioned above. It's already tricked out some, which is good because it's expensive and troublesome to have a gunsmith mess around with a stock Colt in my opinion. It's also cheaper than the next reasonable alternative, a Les Baer or a Wilson - either of which will set you back about $2500.

For self defense, it's hard to beat a Glock 21. None of those girly safeties. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yeah, that's why I'm looking at the USP, Nice example of a modern gun, but no where close to $2500.

I'm also thinking about carrying, it's illegal but it's only a misdemenor in KS. You know the saying..."Better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6"

Too bad Graves is a democrat pretending to be a republican, it's easy to veto a popular conceil carry law when you are surrounded by state troopers all day.
