Team Arena Master.

Here, in Europe, it's very active, several servers to choose from that are often full on the evening.

If only there could be half as many active TDM and CTF servers...

And I'm only talking about servers without mutators that affect the core gameplay.

So the whole goal of Arena Master is to always level the playing field against newbs and skilled players, right?

You shot lighting bolts at the enemy team's full shield and health 24/7 until everyone is dead. CS:S/GoW respawn type, no respawn. All they need now is Bomb planted and Terrorist wins. TDM died shortly after TAM surfaced, it was too hard to play the game the way it was designed for most people.

TDM was already dying when TAM surfaced because people were getting ridiculously bored with the game. If it weren't for TAM, UT2004 would have been a ghost town a year before UT3 came out.

I disagree. I think 2004 was popular so long because it was a great game, not just because of TAM. Not that it matters.

Was TDM much bigger in UT before 2003/2004?

The vanilla game was dead (except maybe in Onslaught) for at least a year prior to UT3 release. The thing is, without official support for the game, all the little issues that drive people crazy eventually make people bored of the game. The same thing happened to UT3 but on a much quicker timeline.

TDM was huge in both of those games after they came out for quite a while.

He must be talking about how it was in the US. 2004 was still popular here in europe the year before UT3 came out.

Onslaught, FFA, Assault with all that Trials-Stuff, Invasion with all those RPG-servers, one-on-one was played a lot, a few TAM servers, but not too many. Low-Grav-Insta-CTF... It wasn't dead at all.

And no vanilla servers? That's my point, those mods that everyone whined about were the only things keeping the game alive at the end.

The way you see it, you are right. In my opinion Insta-Low-Grav-CTF is part of UT, like 1on1. The other default-gametypes that weren't popular just didn't "work".

For example, besides FragBu, I have never seen anyone enjoying normal CTF with a Transloc. Or a lot of people playing Assault online. Or TDM. Doesn't work with WS off or on. That's how I see it.

I guess you're not looking very close. CTF in UT was hugely popular - WITH the translocator.

The Nicest Parts of Hell
2kx DM sucked.

TAM has actually taught me to appreciate the finer points of DM, in it's lack there of and popularity. Even as such, I still say 2kx was terrible for items. The changes they went with respawn times and armor system are MILES better in UT3.

Shield Gun RIP.
