During game play, i've noticed some.. well.. odd things with general recorded pings and latency.. For a few hours yesterday, people from around the world were shown on my server as having pings of 2 (An impossibility..), even though they were all lagging.. all clients showed each other as having great pings except themselves, so:

Player 1 saw player 2 and 3's pings as 3, but their own ping as 230
Player 2 saw player 1 and 3's pings as 3, but their own ping as 230
Player 3 saw player 1 and 2's pings as 3, but their own ping as 230..

(Just example values, but you should understand..)

My ping was a steady 0.. as server runner.. ;)

Now that i've moved my server onto my linux box (situated approx. 60cm (1.5ft) away from my feet) My ping is being reported as 230+ with it dropping occasionally to 3 (but only for less than a quarter of a second).. Now.. call me insane.. but surely thats not right? All players connections are routed through this machine to my linux machine via. Port forwarding, so in theory, they should NEVER have a lower ping than myself, yet the game was reporting people as having a 30 ping, while mine was miles above what it should have been.. (As a note, my ping was still 200+ when there were NO other players). My connection to the server is a 1gb LAN, which is why i'm questioning this.

Any one got any idea whats going on? or how to solve the problems.

As another note, my ping doesnt reflect the game play, when playing i act and move like i have a ping of 3.. just the scoreboard says i don't :/

the only pings that seem accurate are the ones I find in the server browser, the in game pings are almost always wrong, but I dont know why this is :p

^ I've noticed this on my server forever. Its not a big deal as you dont lag.. and if you have a good connection no one else should lag either. Just becarefull hosting on cable as the server will start to lag at like 6 people from my understanding. I host my server off my company lines which is a business class of cable (so I have double the upload.. somehting like 800kb/sec) and even then... the max I ever got on my lines was 16 people. But UnWheel (and UT2004 in general) seems to be a memory hog. Last night in my server with a full 8 people... only 25% of the CPU was being used .. but 100% of the memory... and I have over a gig in that linux machine!! So make sure you have tons of memory too. Thats why I reboot mine everyday now so everyone has very smooth play!

hmm, mine seems to run fine I am running on a Classic Athlon 950 with 448meg of ram and my personal cable connection is 512k up, it was 768k but i had to down grade for a bit.
(Of course i have it set at like 7-8 players as well) because any more than around 7 or 8 seems to be the max, for servers and for the design of the maps (but thats my opinion ;) )

^I'd agree ... 8 seems to be the sweet spot for paying as its not to many people.. but enough to have a bunch of fun. Also before the burnout I will do a temp turnoff of my Half-Life 2 and Half-Life servers.... as im sure those also are using up the memory ;)
