OK, it's saturday, nothings on TV, nothings on in town, so you have to pay for that by reading this post(or not, you still can quit)

Since I'm bored, I just wanted to know how many of you know what exactly the expression bore means, in arms terms. For those who havo no idea what I'm talking, you often hear the expression 12 bore shotgun, 16 bore, 10 bore, and some even might remember to good old four-bore elephant gun of some crazy hunter(forgot his name..)

Gryphon is officially not allowed to post an answer within 24 hours from now - since I expect him to know it for sure..

OK, show me your knowledge..

Ok, when people refer to shotgun sizes as 'bore' what they really mean to use is Gauge.

.410 bore is the actual bore measurement in inches. All other gauge sizes are based upon the number of pure lead spheres of a specific size it would require to have a combined weight of one pound.
(ie it would take 20 balls of .615" in diameter to make one pound. so that's a 20 gauge)

here's what they work out to in inches

Bore Diameter 10ga=.775", 12ga=.729", 16ga=.662", 20ga=.615", 28ga=.550",and finaly .410 bore=.410"

It would be easier if shotguns used Caliber wouldn't it /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hey you could have let some others guess..
I thought there would be some funny descrptions.

But if we are at bore, why not add the four-bore to INF?

When my dad was in the service (mid 60s) a sargent he was stationed with collected old guns, and had aquired a 4ga. (I believe it was made by springfield or winchester) anyway, he wrote the manufacturer and asked where one could get ammo for it. Well they sent him a box of 10 slugs and said that nobody made ammo for that gun any more so they made him a box!
Included with the box was instructions on how to fire the weapon. They went something like this...
The shooter is to sit on the ground with someone else sitting behind, back to back. The other guy is supposed to dig his heals into the ground then the shooter can fire.

They fired 4 of the 10 rounds, the owner of the gun fired twice, and my dad and another guy got to fire it once each. They were all brused and sore /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So if I figure it correctly, a 4ga would be over 1" in diameter.

I've also heard of 6ga shotguns too

The 4ga was smooth bore, like a shotgun. But apparently it was used to fire slugs instead of shot (for hunting elephants). I imagine one could load it with shot (wonder if it would kick less).

I've tried to find info on the gun online, but there's not much out there. And my dad hasn't spoken to the guy who owned it since before I was born (they we're stationed at Ft. Benning Georgia in 1963 I believe, that's where my dad did basic)

Also on a side note, when my dad was in VietNam, he carried a 10ga Winchester semi/pump riot gun. I'd like to find some info on this gun online (maybe see if I could get my hands on one, might make a cool xmas gift). He said it was his prefered weapon in the bush, said you could cut down trees with it if you had to /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
