So I played infiltration using a game of the year copy of UT for 2 or 3 years with no connection problems at all. I havn't played 2.9 for many months, and I just reinstalled it, and now I can't connect to any servers (except AFA, maybe a few others). It just hangs at the connection screen for a few hours (great way to attract new players). I ran a search and saw some bull**** about a creative patch and UT451 or something like that. What's the deal here? PS game of the year edition comes pre-patched for 436.

Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.
Try installing the 436 patch (non-creative). AFA runs 440 so you would not have the CreativePack issue there.

There is a UT 4.36 patch from Creative out there, that adds EAX sounds to UT. The problem is, that it is incompatible with INF2.9 and with UT4.51 servers.
But afaik there is not UT version out there with Creative EAX 4.36 prepatched.
Check if you can connect to the JgKdo Server. If you can, it's not a problem of the creative patch.

WOW AWESOME! So I have a legal copy of UT 436, infiltration 2.9, a good internet connection, and I still can't play online because most servers are using some wierd third party patch not available for macs.
I'm telling all my friends about this game.

Stop jumping to conclusions like that. Patch 451 is meant for servers only, and is network-compatible with clients 436 or higher. But, the Creative 436 patch is not compatible with 451 (because Creative suck), so you can remove it by looking in the common problems thread in troubleshooting. Although I thought the EAX patch was for Windows only... I could be mistaken.
If you've got a mac, you might be having problems with a few packages such as UTMenu.u. You can download the right versions at www.combatmaps.de, look under the tools section. The other thing that might stop you is PureChecker, which is still under development and at the moment only allowes Win2k/XP. JgKdo server doesn't run it.

What exactly does the screen say, and ... what color does the letters have? (yes this is actually important).

Can you name the server you are not able to connect to? Since there aren't that many it shouldn't take very long.
I see currently two reasons why you are not able to connect:
1) You are kicked because of anti cheat tools ran on different servers. This doesn't mean that I accuse you of cheating, it just means that those tools doesn't like mac or linux users (some even 95/98 ones). AFAIK these tools are currently active on InfGermany and 121st servers, so if your connection probs only happens there you know why.
2) Very unlikely: Mac clients have the same problem 436 linux clients have. Under linux you won't be able to join a password protected server for the second time. Though I doubt that you already did any of that
Anyway try to join these servers and report the results:
