Then perhaps you should take a hard look at human nature my friend. It IS human nature. the better you than me mindset is ingrained in us, it's a simple survival mechanism. Those who lack it, die.

Even if you believe in such a thing, then it should be 'better you than us' - not 'me'.

Anyway, I think I made it quite clear it was more of an idealistic view than anything else. Putting humans as born selfish beings is unworkable. With a bit more of an optimistic view it's much easier to change people. For instance the need to belong to a group and have an identity are relatively simple mechanisms that allow change.

Having sex is human nature, and so is eating, no one can deny that.
But there are people who go on hunger-strike, or who don't have sex (eg. priests).
Humans are intelligent beings, and we can "override" our instincts to some degree.
Although this may be possible for single individuals, I think it is very hard accomplish, if not impossible, to accomplish this for large groups (ie. a society)

Of course culture (Or more general: The environment) is important, but cultures are also remarkably similar, the list of traits all known cultures share is quite long (see http://condor.depaul.edu/~mfiddler/hyphen/humunivers.htm).

Without going in to detail (I decided to go to bed early and finally get some decent amount of sleep) - it is usually a whole lot easier to manipulate a group than an individual.

Oh and instead of looking at what is shared among cultures, you should definitely also try to look at a list of differences. Why? Well, some scientists are trying to make you believe that a mouse and a human have 90% of the same DNA - because they are making the fault of looking at what is shared, and looking at the DNA of those particular parts.

I"m not saying that a more just society isn't possible. I'm just saying it would be a hard sell for the majority of the wealthy nations since it entails taking some of our collective wealth and distributing it slightly more evenly. and by slightly I mean a metric ASS LOAD more evenly.

I'm not talking communism I"m talking fair trade instead of simply free trade. The world has a limited amount of resources that's a fact. WEstern "countries" and their tribal ancestors played a mean chess game through history and found ways to horde the best stuff for themselves and they will keep it that way. If we simply traded with more equal opportunity, many countries could at least alleviate SOME of the poverty issues they're facing.

But that's assuming no corruption, free societies, no funky dollar fixing like china does and universal human and labor rights that apply to all nations and can be enforced and regulated by a just and fair universal government that is extremely corruption resistent. It's possible but you have to get through some very powerful people in order to get it set up and they won't give up the status quo without a fight since it's the source of their wealth and power (and since most of us on these boards live in wealthy "western nations" that includes us as well) .

Haha, you know how many old convents have had the skeletal remains of babies buried under them (not to mention the catholic priests and their love of little boys)? Human nature is human nature try to deny it all you want but eventually we all succumb to it. Those traits are still instinctual despite thousands of years of "Civilization" (which i still see more as domestication than actual progress. It smooths some of our sharper edges ; makes us slightly less aggressive and slightly more complacent, but no less dangerous). Nothing is going to change that. Humanity is the most versatile creature ever when it comes to matters of destruction and depravity. We are most innovative when we are finding new and ever more creative ways to destroy ourselves and every creature that shares this planet with us. Tell yourself whatever you'd like to help you sleep at night rostam, but humanity as a whole is just another animal. We're just as savage, instinctual, and unpredictable as any other predator. We're a parasite, we drain the life's blood and resources out of everything we touch.

As negative as that sounds it really gives you a sense of freedom when you think of it that way. Plus all human interaction makes more sense if you look at it honestly. We are but animals, we do the same instinctual things that most animals do, and while there are some who suppress those instinctual habits they, just like animals that lack or suppress their natural instincts, will ultimately die their way out of the genepool.

you should tattoo "nothing short of a civil war will fix this country" on your forehead so that you can wear those words for the rest of your life and look at them every day until you die.

I don't disagree there, I'm just saying people, groups, society etc can change. Human nature takes a lot of time to change, it is a slow mechanism and in a lot of ways we are still built to hunt and gather food. That doesn't mean things are hopeless (and thus give you freedom) - it means you just have to focus on every other factor available (such as culture).

Suppose human nature determines the actions of a person for 99% - even then the 1% remaining is enough to change those actions.

I personally don't believe in a free will, which would mean actions are actually reactions. So logically, I'm the kind of guy that tries to find several sources of something, and then find ways to manipulate the source to get control over the outcome. Edit: a simple (even textbook) example: how strong a person is is determines by his food, training and genetics. Someone could have the genes to become the next champion in weight lifting - but unless he trains and adjusts his eating pattern accordingly, he won't. Simple, effective... and when you apply it to global problems, it's even hopeful.

Intelligence shows itself in what we can contribute to conversation. Whether you agree or disagree with what i say, you seem to lack the intelligence to form a decent response. Perhaps it's a cognitive problem you were born with, perhaps you are just a dumbass. Either way, if you have nothing worthwhile to contribute, you should instead choose to keep quiet.

You write at a 5th grade level and take arguments on the internet seriously. As far as I'm concerned, you make me look fantastic by comparison.

Oh. Okay, you should tattoo those words on your forehead then because I'm sure you'll still agree with that statement in a decade. Do you live in the US? Are you even old enough to vote?

Hilary Clinton: Wants to destroy America's armed forces. Wants to tax the country to death. Wants to automatically enroll people in government programs and tell them they have to participate. Wants to get rid of many our freedoms. She is a communist.

Barack Obama: Thinks he can sit down with Muslim extremists and stop the violence. Wants to tax the country to death. Wants to get rid of many of our freedoms. He is an idiot.

John McCain: Will continue the war, but he doesn't understand the economy, so he won't be able to fund the war. Claims he wants to send the illegals back and build a wall, but his history goes against that. He is a liar.

Those are the people that most America are voting for. They will all tax America like crazy and use tons of money to fight "man-made" global warming, that isn't man-made at all. That's only some of their problems. So, it's probably going to take something at least semi-extreme to get this country back to the world leader that it used to be or at least to stop it from becoming any worse.

Also, there are multi-quotes for a reason. Stop double and triple posting.

Where is that captain obvious cartoon about the elections and taxes when you need it...
A side note on taxes: the less you pay the ****tier your country is. That's how easy taxes work.

    Go away.
That counts double for you, Clutch. Every post you make contains stupid remarks, that only show how little you know. Calling a Clinton, ANY Clinton, a communist? Making remarks about taxes while you have no idea how it works, or about conflicts while you couldn't resolve a conflict in a ****ing kinder garden... seriously, I've suggested this before in this thread: but it really is time for you to start reading, listening and thinking (and no, doing 2 out of 3 isn't good enough).

The higher taxes you pay; the bigger the government is; the more control the government has; the less control the people have; everyone is poor and the government lets you keep you a small portion of the money you earn. If the money is with the people, they can start businesses in America to reduce import and increase export (If you know anything about economics, you'll understand how significant that is), they can afford living costs, they can live better lives, and most important, poverty and the crime because of it is reduced.

Here is how Clinton is a communist:
She will tax the country like crazy, thus creating the big, powerful government and the weak, powerless people that I mentioned before.
She will automatically put people who can't afford private services into government programs, which, because of the economy collapsing because of ridiculous taxes, everyone will be poor and be in these programs.
She plans on taking away our military and our freedom to have guns (no ability to take our country back) as well as tons of other rights we have.

If you have a word for that other than "communist" feel free to share.
