I don't like options. I hate options. I despise options.
Does UT have options for its weapons? No. Because they are balanced. They are good. But then I download some mod (it shall remain nameless) that lets me change the amount of damage which each of its weapons inflict.
Are they not confident enough to think that their default values are playable? Are they so incompetent that they would let some nerd with a server decide how people should play their mod?
Some options are good. Like "frag limit", "graphics detail". Even "superpowerfulmode" would be ok. But letting me set each weapons damage, from 1 to 255, is excessive. Give me 3 choices, or 4, or 2. Not 255!
Some argue that it adds replayabilty. Lets us customize it to our personal style.
I say it lets people stuff it up, it makes the mod non-standard. People will play it and not enjoy it, and will they notice that the settings had been fiddled with? No, they'll just assume that the mod is crap.
Options are good, and can be fun. In moderation. But don't give us options which you know are stupid. Don't let us set the nuke's damage to zero. In fact, don't let us set it to anything besides a few predefinced values which are proven to 'work'.
When I am relaxing from the stress of coding, playing someone elses mod, the last thing I want to do is balance and playtest the thing myself.
