i thought the ending was ok, in a mapping sense. it makes me wonder why they didnt include anymore cinematics. although i guess it would be kind of hard to have cinematics in a game as devoid of plot as unreal. which leads me to the ending. it was built from the ground up just to support a sequel. unreal2 damn well better have story out the *** to make up for this.
the game has its moments. a lot of the good stuff seemed to have been used at the very beginning and the very end. (im thinking the character of vortex rikers and the neatoness of the darkening). the rest of the stuff just seems to be filler. running through countless coridors pulling big blocky levers and pushing buttons. this wouldnt be so bad if the corridors werent so winding and confusing too. it all seems like an attempt an nonlinearity gone awry. thats all i can think of right now.aabaubioaubio

Hi Nucas,
That ending cinematic map occupies the entire vertical world height in the editor, so I guess they just ran out of room. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif
I agree: some of the maps really stood out. I loved the Darkening and the Sunspire. (I didn't care as much for the castle-type themes). I think there should have been a lot more scripted sequences like the Skaarj ambush early in the game and a greater feeling of continuity between the maps (the Translator references to the Sunspire and the ISV-Kran early on were nice touches and I wish there had been more of these in the game)

I enjoyed Unreal throughout. I loved the Darkening and the Sunspire too, I also really enjoyed Chizra - Nali Water God, Na Pali Haven and Bluff Eversmoking to name but a few.
I liked the ending, and thought it was a nice plot twist. As to "devoid of plot" well I wouldn't say that... translator messages kept a nice flow in the game... better than Quake or Q2...
If you want to follow on from the ending btw get Return to Na Pali, that sorts it.

it seems like no one bothered to actaully incorporate anything you read in the translator into the game. about the only thing it is good for is reading signs and lables for doors. i mean if they incorporated a whole journal thing into it, why not add some actual plot. you crash. you grab a gun. then there is nothing about the main plot again until the end. you have your filler levels of course, and the occasional little pointless journal entry about the gods or somthing. if your gonna use a narrative system straight out of system shock, at least least try to have half the depth of that game.
the game had some great moments, the opening levels, the fight with that skaarj in rrarjigar mine, the darkening, but its just wieghted down by the rest of the game.
one thing i will give unreal credit for though, it had great music
i seem to have run out of dr pepper, im going to get some more and post somthing else later

I liked the intermediate levels, they were the best ones! Rrajigar is dull - though that Skaarj ambush is cool.

The visiting of lots of places on the planet is what the game is all about, exploring a strange world you crash on. Seems to me Unreal pulled it off perfectly.

unreal could have been fun for me but i kept getting lost and found myself wandering in circles for a while. towards the end of the game it got so annoying i just started ghosting through forcefields and doors. its entirely possible to wander through a level with a good deal of it unexplored. and my second largest grievance, the peashooters your given that are passed off as guns. whats Unreal is the ammount of ammunition required to kill somthing.

But isn't that the idea? To lose yourself in the levels and enjoy the sightseeing? I for one don't play a FPS game just to move from one level to the next as quickly as I can, but to wander around and admire the beauty of the levels, and in this respect I think Unreal delivers. Ah, well, guess it's just me...

Exploring a level is cool, but there were a few times (actual more then a few) where I would just get so completly lost that "ghost" became a good friend. :)

(Of course, when those g-d Pupae, or however it's spelled, things appeared, "god" became a good friend too. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Were you reading the Translator Messages? I always found they gave me plenty of info to complete the game without ghost or god.

Done it on Unreal skill already.

Unreal1 was actually treated as a full mystery, hence its design. There have been lots of other games full of storylines, plots, but If YOU crashlanded on a mysterious planet and couldnt communicate with the natives, what would it be like?
You have unreal.

All I know is that I got stuck on the first level with lava in it and thats where i stayed for the next several hours until i said screw this and put the game in its box and back on my shelf. Until I found this site and its many tips on editing the game. I have thus picked the game back up but I still havn't gotten past that damn level!

I have to agree with Cammy(cool name!),exploring is a blast! Why do you think MYST sold so many copies!!! Because, thank god, there are a lot of people out there who are curious about what the hell's around the next bend; ya never know what might just jump out at ya or what cool goodies you'll come upon! And how in the heck can you get ambushed? I keep hearing brutes grunt even when they are a room or two away! And when I hear a sound straight out of edward scissorhands(SHHCHING,SHHCHING) I go -oh boy there's an s-of-a-b Skarrj nearby! Not exactly the model of ninja-like stealth these guys!!! Oh, and Cammy, where exactly does "creme de cammy" come from?(asked in an absolutely innocent frame of mind course. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Unreal is a good game.
There are those occasional levels that really annoy you like that level inside the sunspire, expecting you to find your way to the top by pressing buttons, taking elevators and walking in the dark.
But every game has it's flaws
