~After All~

Please trip them gently, they don't like to fall
There's no room for anger, we're all very small
We're painting our faces and dressing in thoughts from the skies, from paradise
But they think that we're holding a secretive ball.
Won't someone invite them
They're just taller children, that's all, after all

Man is an obstacle, sad as the clown
So hold on to nothing, and he won't let you down
Some people are marching together and some on their own
Quite alone
Others are running, the smaller ones crawl
But some sit in silence, they're just older children
That's all, after all

I sing with impertinence, shading impermanent chords,
With my words
I've borrowed your time and I'm sorry I called
But the thought just occurred that we're nobody's children at all, after all

Live your rebirth and do what you will
Forget all I've said, please bear me no ill
After all, after all

From The Man Who Sold The World, one of the best albums David Bowie ever did, and the first LP (yes, I do mean 12" vinyl) that I bought. "After All" is an excellent track, tho my favourite is "All the Madmen"...

Day after day
They send my friends away
To mansions cold and grey
To the far side of town
Where the thin men stalk the streets
While the sane stay underground

Day after day
They tell me I can go
They tell me I can blow
To the far side of town
Where it's pointless to be high
'Cause it's such a long way down

So I tell them that
I can fly, I will scream, I will break my arm
I will do me harm
Here I stand, foot in hand, talking to my wall
I'm not quite right at all...am I?

Don't set me free, I'm as heavy as can be
Just my librium and me
And my E.S.T. makes three

'Cause I'd rather stay here
With all the madmen
Than perish with the sadmen roaming free
And I'd rather play here
With all the madmen
For I'm quite content they're all as sane
As me

(Where can the horizon lie
When a nation hides
Its organic minds
In a cellar...dark and grim
They must be very dim)

Day after day
They take some brain away
Then turn my face around
To the far side of town
And tell me that it's real
Then ask me how I feel

Here I stand, foot in hand, talking to my wall
I'm not quite right at all

Don't set me free, I'm as helpless as can be
My libido's split on me
Gimme some good 'ole lobotomy

'Cause I'd rather stay here
With all the madmen
Than perish with the sadmen
Roaming free
And I'd rather play here
With all the madmen
For I'm quite content
They're all as sane as me

Zane, Zane, Zane
Ouvre le Chien
Zane, Zane, Zane
Ouvre le Chien
Zane, Zane, Zane
Ouvre le Chien
Zane, Zane, Zane
Ouvre le Chien
Zane, Zane, Zane
Ouvre le Chien

You've just gotta love that chorus :D

I agree DedMeat. In fact, I was considering posting "All the madmen". Bowie was such a deep, emotional artist. It is a shame he became a pop star and abandoned art. But sophisticated thoughts and intricate lyrics\poetry does not sell to the shallow masses.

Well I dont consider myself very sophisticated but I was a big Bowie fan in the 70's and early 80's. I do prefer his early stuff (Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Alladin Sane, Diamond Dogs). There is genius in many of his lyrics. For example...

I was Stone and he was Wax
So he could scream, and still relax, unbelievable

From The Bewlay Brothers - Hunky Dory, paints a great picture :)

And if you're in a "romantic just split up with boy/girlfriend" mood how about "Letter to Hermione" from Space Oddity...

The hand that wrote this letter
Sweeps the pillow clean
So rest your head and read a treasured dream
I care for no one else but you
I tear my soul to cease the pain
I think maybe you feel the same
What can we do?
I'm not quite sure what we're supposed to do
So I've been writing just for you

They say your life is going very well
They say you sparkle like a different girl
But something tells me that you hide
When all the world is warm and tired
You cry a little in the dark
Well so do I
I'm not quite sure what you're supposed to say
But I can see it's not okay

He makes you laugh
He brings you out in style
He treats you well
And makes you up real fine
And when he's strong
He's strong for you
And when you kiss
It's something new
But did you ever call my name
Just by mistake?
I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do
So I'll just write some love to you

I could fill a whole thread with great Bowie lyrics but it would probably bore the ass of the youngsters, so I wont :)
