Setting up a server.....help me out

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Can someone help me out here....

I'm trying to set up a server. So far I got it to work on the internet, but sometimes it just crashes or stops without any real reason.... :(

Can someone tell me what I should look for, the basics?

Please help me out, thanx ;)

What OS are you using ?
Is UT installed correctly & the latest version ? (v436 is the latest if you've got Windows-version)

I'm using Windows 98 as OS, soon Windows XP, depends on what's better for my server?

UT is installed correctly, no doubt about that. Version 436. This problem is only caused when I log in on the server from the same machine as the server (but I don't do that anymore), but sometimes it just happens during gametime. It drops out. I find it weird, but maybe you have some answer or things I should consider.

Maybe it has something to do with lack of bandwidth. I don't have much, but it should be enough to support 4 players (20 k/s upload). I get the idea though that the server is crashing when it's full (4 players logged into it). Experiencing a lot of lag too. If you got any answers for me I would appreciate it!

Thanx for replying though ;)

one thing : you can't play UT if you're running a dedicated server on the same machine.

It is weird though, altough I haven't tried the v2.86 I have run a server without any of those weird crashes on a Win98-system.

Are you sure you've got the 'connectionspeed'-settings in regular UT set correctly ?
And are you sure that you don't try to run a lan-game instead of an regular internet-game ?

As a server you really shouldn't run Win 9x, but WinNT or any of the newer versions.

I'm going to install WinXP asap. Think my Win98 installation was the problem to those weird crashes. I've been running it for two years now and lately things went really bad. Not just with the INF server, with everything. So the connectionspeed setting wasn't the problem. My system got terribly low in resources starting a server, but the more people logged on to it, the less resources were available. This is normal, but I'm running it on a 512mb ram @ 1200mhz pc which should not have any trouble with it. So I'll blame it on Win98 being to slow after all that time.

I agree on using a newer version of Windows based on NT kernel for servers. So I'll get back to you on these problems after my WinXP installation.

Thanks for taking the time to answer though!
