something thats been niggling me for a while now, why do some shotties (thats australian for shotgun) have the ability for semi fire and pump fire ? surely in a combat situation you'd just leave it in semi

yeah , thats what I have heard aswell (pump being more powerfull that semi). Personaly I much prefere semi , even if it is less powerfull. Not having to load another shell makes it soooo much quicker and saves your life if you miss the first time!

P.S. Does the word "pump" in relation to shotguns refere to the actual action , or the way the shell is loaded?

I used to rock and roll all night and party every day. Then it was every other day. Now I'm lucky if I can find half an hour a week in which to get funky.

Why would a shotgun with the same shell be more powerful just by flipping a switch from semi to pump??

or is this some sort of equalizing deal so the semi and the pump are balanced.

I somehow doubt that in real life a pump gun would be more powerful then a semi, when firing the exact same shell.

Actually, I've always thought it was the other way around.
Semi-auto shotguns require a certain amount of recoil(?) to make the gun eject the spent shell and chamber the next one. Pump action was included for shells that weren't powerful enough to make the shotgun cycle in semi-auto.
That's what I've always heard, but I may be mistaken.

Sponge is right- shells need to be powerful enough to cycle the next round for semi auto to work- the idea is if you want cheap rounds for your shotgun, you'll need to use pump. Otherwise if you go for the more expensive rounds, you can use both. The cost difference isn't a whole helluva lot for Inf, but it's just another option. If we're going to have the Benelli M3S90, which has the ability for semi and pump, we may as well go the whole 9 yards /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And breaching, less-than-lethal, and riot rounds are a garaunteed pump... they're such wimpy rounds (well, two of them aren't even ment to kill people) that you'd have to cycle them yourself. Though i doubt infiltration will include any LTL rounds.

Geez, I don't think ANYBODY caught the fact that jaunty was asking about REAL shotguns. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Mojo summed it up in his post. Some rounds do not have enough inertia to cycle a semiautomatic action. Door-breaching loads, flares, reduced-recoil "tactical" loads, etc. If you load up a Benelli M1 Super 90 with reduced-recoil buckshot and hang ONE attachment off it, the gun will not cycle because it's too heavy. Heard that directly from the Benelli sales manager myself. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
