During the Japan launch event in Tokyo, and touted as one of Epic Games' biggest UE3 announcements ever, it was revealed that Scaleform GFx will be bundled with Unreal Engine 3.

UPDATE: Epic has confirmed that Scaleform GFx will be bundled with a future release of UDK, as well!

Hopefully that doesn't mean every single UE title from now on will have the silly holographic Dead Space inventory management system :\ What is wrong with nice, readable, smooth, big 2D menus?..

I loved Dead Space's menu system so I'm really happy about this!

    UI + mouse = win

UI - mouse + key binds on both sides of keyboard = fail

Not all of us took touch typing in school, and at least one of us refuses to learn it after 30+ years just to play games more efficiently.

Allowing for both mouse and key binds is great, but when you take away the mouse it just starts being cumbersome.

NOTE: I love how they tease us with the UT3 menu/models/weapons/power-ups. What purpose it could possibly server mid-game is anyone's guess... not like it will be implemented any way.

Gears fans; the people least likely to even notice this type of stuff anyway.

I've seen great looking GFx UIs, but I have yet to see one that properly function.
The focus model and input handling is usually quite ****. This is probably because it's based on flash, which doesn't have a proper focus model and input handling.

Yeah, I'm pretty confused by integrating a technology that is riddled with all kinds of problems into game UIs. I guess it's not much different than most game UIs anyway, but still...

The only game I have that I can remember integrating Scaleform is Borderlands... And the menus are buggy and don't work with the mouse at all.
On the design side they're better than UT3's pre "black patch" (They don't have weird button placement and fifty pages to go through) but on the functional side, they're pretty much the worst I've seen by far. Page Up and Page Down, really?
Please don't let it be like that for all UE3 future games.

Edit: Oh, there's Mass Effect also I believe. That's a better one.

OMG, Borderlands menu it the game's biggest flaw, just mindless conversion from console.

Every toolkit that enchanced UDK is welcome, however I would rather see something of actual value, as it's shown on the second screenshot.

some UE games using scaleform: Borderland, Mass Effect 1+2, Bioshock 1+2, Batman: Arkham Asylum

So far Scaleform works ok for games that do not depend a lot on the UI interaction.

    Look what I found:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKDuzVbi50Q

It contains a brief intro to the 3D UIs, then it goes on to show the 3D UIs being used in UT3, both the 3D Dead Space-style menu and a slightly different version of the HUD pictured above (Honestly, Epic should have hired these guys to do the menus, the ones in this video look AWESOME!).

Can't wait to use this stuff in the next UDK release!

Hmm. I always like the "Colin McRae: Dirt" front end, thought that was pretty snazzy and original. Maybe this can be used to create something like that..
