COMMON PROBLEMS WITH INF - READ BEFORE POSTING!

Sublime originally reposted this on the old forums, eventually it got buried a few pages down and got forgotten, but this has some real good info about what some errors are and how to fix them. Also since I'm re-posting this I can add updates if anyone has them that will make this easier and eliminate alot of "overposting" of common questions.

Italicized items have been fixed since the original post of this thread. At least this is to the best of my knowledge.

Common Questions/Answers

Before any of you post with your troubleshooting woes, please search the forum and see if your questions has been answered. The topic may not apply to the question so read them all. The first 2 pages should do. Now, to answer a couple of questions that get asked every single day.

1. Read the manual. Now, read it again. Follow it step by step.

2. FIXED for v2.86Yes, it's really version 2.85.5. At smaller resoultions, (under 1024x768) you will not see the rest of the version number in the upper-left corner of the menu-screen. If you have any doubts you can do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and view the name of the window in the task list.

3. If you can't do (whatever it is you want to do, use flashlight, go prone, reload, etc.), it might be because you didn't bind the keys to it. Double-check your options menu to ensure that it is set correctly.

4. You do not start Infiltration from within UT. If you have this problem you haven't done number 1.

5. FIXED for v2.86The General Protection Fault that you get upon running Infiltration can be taken care of by deleting the Running.ini file from the UnrealTournament\System directory, or simply starting UT (which should come up in a SAFE MODE) and then cancelling out of it.

6. Use stuffit 6 or zipit to unzip the files to your Macintosh. Stuffit 6 fixed whatever caused it to corrupt and unzips it correctly, so these should work for you now., however there have been reports that Stuffit doesn't work to well on some Mac platforms. If you have any more information regarding this please contact me.

7. Read the manual.

8. Read the forums.

9. Read the manual and the forums.

10. Use the forum search command. It works.

11. If you experience lag/extra weapons on larger levels, try going to the console and typing FLUSH.

12. Yes, we know the 40mm grenades from both the H&K 69 and the M16A2 grenade launcher bounce off of targets at close range. It's supposed to be that way. They must travel approximately 14m before arming via a spin mechanism.

13. If the game suddenly starts to go in slow-motion, enjoy it for a minute and take the time to appreciate the incredible attention to detail in the animations. Once you have appreciated it long enough, open the console and type "slomo 1.0".

14. Yes, fileplanet can be as slow as a herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter (when it even works), so I'd advise getting your INF here as well as you can find some maps here. That last link is courtesy of [Delta]Predator, Thanks Delta!

15. If you want to play the maps, get the map pack(s). You must have the map pack(s) to play the shooting range.

16. The advised order of installation for a CLEAN install is as follows:
1. Unreal Tournament
2. Unreal Tournament Patch (latest as of time of this writing is 436)
3. Infiltration Map Pack #1 (280)
4. Infiltration Map Pack #2 (285)
5. Infiltration Map Pack #3 (286)
6. Infiltration Mod 2.86

I've done three machines this way without fail so it should work, if you've got an existing version (285 or older) I'd suggest removing and re-installing clean as you'll run into less hassles. All of the above files can be found here.

17. Look before posting.

18. OS X for the Macintosh seems to have issues running the game in Rave mode. In order to fix this people have been re-booting back to the old OS (9.1) and have been able to play without a problem. Any more input on this would be appreciated.

19. FIXED for v286No you CANNOT fire while crawling prone, and as far as I know you're not supposed to be able to.

20. FIXED for v286Yes it IS a known bug that when you are using a weapon with the scope in zoom mode (i.e. M16, Sig, Sniper Rifles) and quick-action to the grenades, you stay zoomed but have the ability to toss the grenades. You can cycle through the weapons and it will re-set the view until they fix this.

21. If you are experiencing an Infadds.u error, most likely your Infadds.u file is corrupted. You can download it here.

22. If you are running Windows 98, 98SE or ME with more then 512 megs of RAM, you will have to edit some system files. Check the link here for info on how to do it and what the problems are.

23. If you are experiencing slowdowns or poor performance, check below for some tips on increasing the performance and optimizing your system for best results. Again any comments/additions are welcome!

OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES
I've taken some hints from a recent PC Gamer magazine article, and applied them towards Infiltration for optimizing performance.

NOTE: AS OF NOW THESE PROGRAMS/TECHNIQUES WILL ONLY WORK ON PC MACHINES. I AM NOT AT ALL FAMILIAR WITH MACINTOSH COMPUTERS SO I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO APPLY THESE TECHNIQUES.
THE PROGRAMS MENTIONED IN THIS POST WILL NOT WORK ON WINDOWS 2000 or NT MACHINES.

The first tip that I have for you involves your harddisk cache and optimizing it. Download CacheBooster and install it, when it's completed, launch the program from your Start menu, you'll get the following screen:

From the drop-down menu I selected Gaming, then clicked on Apply changes, it will ask you if you want to apply them, click YES and then reboot.

Another way to increase performance of the game itself is to free up as much memory as possible and allocate it to Infiltration. You can do this with the aid of the MaxMem program and setting a heap memory size for the game.

To set the heap memory, right-click on your Infiltration Icon on your desktop, this should give you a pop-up menu, select properties from the menu and you'll see the Shortcut Properties. On the TARGET line place your cursor all the way at the far-right at the end. Then type in -heapsize 90000, this will allocate approx 90 megabytes of your memory to the program. It is reccomended that you do at least 2/3 of your system Ram, so if you've
got 64 megs, do -heapsize 42000, etc. The formula to figure it would be:

sysram * .666667 = 2/3 of sysram

256 * .666667 = 170
128 * .666667 = 90
64 * .666667 = 42

and so on, your target screen should now look like this:

In this case, I have 128 megs of RAM on this machine, so I set the heapsize to 90000

Another trick is to be able to have as much free memory available to the game when you play it, optimally this would be to reboot your PC each time you want to play to flush the memory clean. Most of us don't want to do this and would prefer another method. Well if you download MaxMem, you can clear your memory. Upon installing the program you will get a little black box in your system tray, right-click on this and select Config from the pop-up menu, this will bring up a screen with some slider bars and a pull-down menu. Depending on your optimization likes, you can choose how much ram to leave available/free up with each run of the program.

I selected Perform Agressive Cleanup from the list. Click the OK button and you should be back at your desktop. Now position your cursor over the black box in the system tray, you should get a pop-up that says Free: 81M (64%) or something along those lines, your numbers will most likely be different then mine depending on how much ram you have, etc. Left-click once on the box and your computer will run for a few seconds, you should notice a white bar move from the top to the bottom of the black box, and when you put your mouse over the box again, your Free memory message should be a bit higher now having cleared out some extra space.

I applied these tricks and DID notice an increase in game performance. I gained a few extra FPS (about 7-10 depending on the map) and it did seem to run a bit smoother. I'm sure depending on your system you will notice more/less. I have applied this to one of my machines:

AMD T-bird 900
128 PC133 ram
Win98SE
ATI Radeon 64 DDR
Cable connection

Geforce Users: Tips on improving Performance with OpenGL. Courtesy of /\l!eN[RIP]

First of I would like to say that running Inf in OpenGL will increase system performance slightly as opposed to D3D in 32 bit. Opposed to D3d 16 bit, OpenGL in 32 bit is slightly havier to run, but it looks a 1000 times better!

To set it up:

1) First of dl the latest OpenGL.dll from here:http://unreal.epicgames.com/ and place it in your UnrealTournament/system dir

2) Edit your Infiltration.ini under the head '[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]' so it will look loke this:

RefreshRate=60 <------ IMPORTANT set this to your monitor refreshrate
DetailTextures=1
UseTrilinear=1
UseS3TC=1
UseTNT=0
LODBias=0
UseMultiTexture=1
UsePalette=1
UseAlphaPalette=0
Translucency=1
VolumetricLighting=1
ShinySurfaces=1
Coronas=1
HighDetailActors=1
MaxAnisotropy=0
AlwaysMipmap=0
UsePrecache=0
SupportsLazyTextures=0

3) Set your desktop to use 32 bit (True Color).

4) Set Infiltration to use OpenGL/32 bit (True Color).

5) Enjoy Inf with (almost) no grafical glitches in OpenGL. Especially check your guns, which look awsome now!

Again I am simply reposting this from the other forum as they might all go ka-put, this was originally posted by Sublime so all credits go to him, I'm just posting it here as it helped me immensely as well as others I'm sure. I'd like to keep this updated perhaps with some new errors/bugs, if anyone has any please add them to this and I'll update the listing as necessary.

Moderators please don't delete/close this thread if the others are moved over, I'd like to keep this one up to date and keep it near the top of the listing to help.

If there are any broken links, bad info, or corrections, please feel free to let me know. Email me at wiseassbnty@yahoo.com or ICQ me at 35477997 and I'll make the changes..

Stuffit for Mac

Actually is the lack of information for users on how to unstuff files on a Mac.

UT files are not OS dependent. So the same files should 90% of the time work on a Mac when they work on PC.

But if you read some of the read me's on some of the files, stating to make sure you go into Stuffit's preferences, and change the state of cross platform to "Never".

So as long as all mac users can make sure they set their stuffit preferences for cross platform to never, they should have no problems.

mac stuffit info

is actually a holdover from the 2.80-2 days when stuffit(latest version was 5.5 then) would corrupt the INF launcher when unzipping it(with the options set correctly), but zipit would unzip it properly. however stuffit 6 fixed whatever caused it to corrupt and unzips it correctly. i don't even know if stuffit 5.5 would corrupt the 2.85 launcher...

this kind of thing is what i mean about needing to update the new 2.85 info

StuffIt 6 is not very friendly...

Maybe this problem doesn't crop up on other Macs, but at least on mine StuffIt 6 REFUSES to work. You might want to mention that some people may have problems using StuffIt 6.

Just so nobody comes crying to ou if things don't work out for them =-)

The best option for Macs working with ZIP files, is to use the Shareware program: ZipIt.

You can grab it, HERE, on VersionTracker.

I hjave never had a problem with ZipIt, and it seems to unzip much faster than Stuffit.

Trouble Shooting

The re-post by wiseassbnty was a real help, The error I'm getting is 25 and the link to the rest of it is dead.
It would be great if I could get a hold of the rest of it.
So I could get up and running.

order of installing (mac)

in your suggested order of installing, you list: 2.85 FULL, 2.85.3 PATCH, 2.80 MAP, 2.85 MAP. however macs must also add those two files that come with the launcher. my question is: when should i install those files? i assume it would be done last, or before the maps, and not inbetween 2.85 and 2.85.3, but so far INF just keeps messing up on me. do you suppose when i install these two files could have an effect (they are related to rendering, and i have a rendering problem)?

just asking cuz i'm out of ideas on trying to solve my black scope problem.

i could stop playing INF, but i don't wanna...

just one thing: Stuffit 6 might mess up your Mac, should be mentioned here. many people reported severe OS problems after installing it.
i did all my unzipping with Stuffit 5.5 (as mentioned make a proper setup), installing order was 2.85/map pack2.85/mac launcher/patch282/patch2.83, all of them umod files.
works like a charm after some tweaking (thx to the forum members help!).
but lets face it: this mod (i love it though!) is one bug, not user friendly at all, causing problems frequently. INF looks not too bad, i really enjoy the gameplay(features,maps...), but it works as bad as a VERY early beta, more like a "first playable version".

i've been waiting to add anything new to this untill 2.86 came out because i was hoping it would fix lots of this kind of stuff, but i've seen this once a lot since we moved over to the new forums and lost all the old troubleshooting stuff.

anyway, in the following thread is the info for the Mac server browser fix. please assimilate it:

mac info...

the order for installing on a mac will be near identical to step 16 except that at any point after you install the 2.85 UMOD you'll need to install the Mac Launcher and the .ini files that came with it, then put the new Browser info in. so anytime after the UMOD but before your first run INF.

second the OSX(ggrrrr, we had a great thread on this in the old forums...) while INF/UT will run inside OS X the performance will be attrocious for a couple reasons, first off, most any app run in classic will take a performance hit. remember, for all purposes "classic enviornment" is just an OS 9.1 emulator program, second, afaik, classic apps are not allowed direct hardware access!

Westlake is rumored to be porting UT to OS X...even then, this would be useless to us unless the INF Launcher is ported too

"UMOD needs file association" FIX

As far as I know this is a PC problem only. Stole this off the 3D spotlight UT_FAQ. I'm going to try and attach the file but included the URL also.

Q: I'm having problems with *.umod files. How can I fix it?

A: Sometime's the file association for umod's gets messed up. Instead of the normal double-click to install them you will get the Open With dialog. To fix this you must restore the file association, or use the following procedure.

1. Download this registry file & add it to your registry (double click the umod.reg file). You will need to edit the umod.reg file with Notepad if you installed Unreal Tournament in a different different directory than the default.

2. Extract the contents of the ZIP file (i.e. the *.umod file) to a temporary folder such as C:\Temp. Click Start, Run & enter the following command:

C:\UnrealTournament\System\Setup.exe install C:\Temp\UTBonusPack.umod

Change the file directories as appropriate.

URL for Registry file(382kb) at fileplanet:

http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?planetunreal/ram2000/zips/toolsnumods/utregfix.exe

Please include the following when posting

Assuming the answer to your problem is not found here and you have to post please do the following:

1. State if you are using a MAC or PC. This is one of the few games that is ported for both, don't assume everyone is using the same OS you are.

2. Try to include your system spec's. For example posting something like "I'm having video problems" might not get any results. Posting "I'm having these video problems with my brandX card." is more likely to get you feedback from someone with the same hardware.

3. Try to include any error messages and/or a screenshot . Any other information you can give is also helpful like what seemed to trigger the problem, is it random, can it be duplicated, etc...

4. Follow up on your posts. If something someone suggested worked please let everyone else know. If find the solution yourself or someplace else please post it here also.

5. Try to be patient and stay calm, it may take a few a days or longer to get a response. Its understandable to get frustrated when things aren't working but coming back to this forum and insulting the team and the people here won't get you any help period. Remember the people here are only human and don't claim to have all the answers.

wow!

I'm so happy to see this still around. I'm afraid I haven't been visiting this forum much lately due to time constraints, but thanks a lot for keeping it up. I just hope it helps those in need. You guys are doing a wonderful job of keeping it updated!

One of the biggest problems I'm seeing now on IRC is the version mismatch issue. Updating #11 may help that a bit as a lot of people seem to be skipping 2.85.3 to get to 2.85.5.

Windows INF uninstall

This seems to come up from time to time.

If you need to uninstall INF goto Control Panel>Add/Remove programs. IGNORE the INF program listing and instead goto the UnrealTournament program and hit Add/Remove. When the UT uninstall starts select only the INF components and hit Next.

"Here's a much better solution to deleting running.ini, or even running UT first.

Just use UT instead of Infiltration.exe.

Here's what I mean.. modify your shortcuts.. let's say, for example, that your infiltration shortcut says:

C:\UnrealTournament\System\Infiltration.exe entry.unr USERINI=InfiltrationUser.ini

If we change that to user UnrealTournament.exe, we get much higher stability when starting up, for example:

C:\UnrealTournament\System\UnrealTournament.exe entry.unr INI=Infiltration.ini USERINI=InfiltrationUser.ini

I have bold-faced the differences.

I use this shortcut method and have found it to be a lot less hassle.

Mike"

Thank you for this most excellent tip! I tried it in desperation
since Inf always froze, sometimes after 2 minutes, sometimes
after 2 hours. It seems to have solved the problem quite well,
I`ve managed several 4-hour sessions without problems.
