I have tried to get into #planetunreal and I get stuck at the "end of MOTD command". What exactly am I supposed to do next. Thanks, m0!

Are you joining #planetunreal through the UT multiplayer browser? or through some IRC? (i.e. mIRC) I've never seen that before, and I was just in there, and had no prob's at all. I really don't know what that means.

I remember now...MOTD stands for Message Of The Day. Something that PU puts on the beginning of their chat room as a welcome message. From there you should just be able to type away with other people...that is...if there are other people online. Just try typing something in, and see if your connected or not. Once you type it in, just hit Enter, and your text should display right under that End of MOTD command. I'm guessing that no one is on that channel right now...though I could be wrong.

Yeah, make sure that the irc.gamelink.net server is being used (default in the UT browser...you'll have to switch manually in mIRC or equivalent).

It sometimes takes a while to get in using my 56k modem depending on the quality of my connection. Sometimes it doesn't log-in - usually quiting mIRC and then executing the program again works.

Or, reconnecting to my phone line to get a better connection works as well.

This is what I'm doing. I start up UT. Select Find Internet games. Select CHAT. Coose #planetunreal from the drop down menu. Click connect. When it connects it gives me a bunch of info about the rules and administrators. After the MOTD line I have tried to type the only commands mentioned on the page. They were to register a channel and to register a nickname. Neither did anything and whenever I try to type something to see if I am already in the chat, a message pops up that says ***Not in a channel! I don't know what I'm doing wrong, it seems weird that no one else has encountered this before. Thanks for the help.

try clicking on the bottommost input bar on the 'system' tab and type /join #planetunreal .. I'm not sure if the problem is that simple but it seems as if your UT irc client isn't joining #pu automatically so you may need to join it manually

Maybe you need to click on the #planetunreal tab to make it the active window. :D

BTW: It looks to me like you can connect to the IRC server just fine. The pic shows the last lines of the messages I get when connecting to gameslink (when everything goes well).

It's happened to me......

I was using my wifes laptop (at my office)and dialing in. The problem was identical to what I_B is describing. It would act like it's logging you in and then just stop. It was really wierd. I just figured it was down. I've never had the problem on my home system though.

Don't ask me why, but:

The Underline "_" in your name is the reason it doesn't work.

Several people had the same prob (including me). All of them can join now, after not using certain characters anymore. (_, =, .... are not allowed in your name).

Visit site
If its not your name that is the prob then you will have to re instal UT.

Its happened to me before...for some reason the in game irc gets corrupted and wont log in.

I hope it is your name :)

My screen looks like the one AZMO posted, except it doesn't have the #planetunreal tab to choose. There is nothing next to the System tab. I believe that it also shortened my name when I connected, so I don't think that is the problem. Oh well, I appreciate everyones input. If I can't figure it out I don't think I want to reinstall UT. I had to do that once already and it was a major pain to get everything set back up the way I had it. Also I have way too many maps to unzip all over again. Thanks again.

Try connecting to utgames.gameslink.net or q3arena.gameslink.net. Sometimes the irc.gameslink.net address produces weird results.

There's another thing you could try:

Open your UnrealTournament.ini and search for "UBrowserIRCSystemPage"

There are three lines below it with the nicks you use to connect to IRC. Make sure there are no spaces or special characters in them. It may be a good idea to change them to a random sequence of letters + numbers ("a7wsc11w2" for example). Why? Because then you're certain you've got a valid nickname (so that can't be the problem anymore), and the chance of anyone else using that "nick" is also very small.

Once you're properly connected, you can change your nickname by typing:

/nick {NEW_NICK}

BTW: You're not banned from #pu, are you? Which ISP do you use?

I'll try changing the Nick name in the ini file. If that doesn't work I'll try it when connected to IRC. I have not been banned (yet) and I use Earthlink.

I quit! Thanks for the help guys, but I think its time to throw in the towel. I'm afraid that since I have gone through all this trouble to get into the chat, it has made me not want to get in anymore. I'll just stick to playing UT and posting here. Besides that takes up enough of my time already. Thanks again.
