He should quit disturbing the rest of us and just play his role in society. I mean, who is he to experiment with other life styles? Hasn't he ever heard of a birthright? I never went through phases, you never went through phases, no-one else on this board has ever gone through a phase and by God, no-one else should ever be allowed to go through a phase. We all know that everyone develops the same way and at the same speed.

If it's not meant to be, he'll grow out of it. Hopefully your disturbance will be alleviated if that happens. I guess it takes a bit more to disturb me; I usually reserve it for important things.
I'm sure that if we go through a list of every song you've ever been into, we won't find anything that conflicted with who you really are, what you've really done and what you've ever believed in.
Of course. That's why all of the "posers" in the INF community who never have, never would and never will kill anyone can still play a game that is designed to simulate realistically shooting other people in the face (and then go around bragging to CS players about how much more "real" they are). Now those people are disturbing. :p

I never said I didn't listen to music that outside my own experiences, but I sure as **** didn't sing about it.

Playing a game and claiming to be a "legend in NY" are two seperate things.

So it's okay as long as you don't sing about it? Once someone hums a few bars it becomes "disturbing?" That makes sense.
Playing a game, and claiming to be a gun expert who boasts how "real" his game is are also two seperate things.

Not disturbing, just stupid. It would be like me rapping about my story as a single mother of three trying to raise kids in a trailer park. Less extreme, but a branch off the same tree.

Yes. Only some people here actually are gun experts.

*Shrug* Hey, if that's what makes you happy, then go right ahead. I can think a thousand worse things that you could be doing.
And some people in Europe are actually gangsters, so I don't see your point.

Unless, of course, I don't like it. Then you can't listen to it.

I'll second that to a degree. YOu are right however your mad for the wrong reasons in my opinion.

    1) Gangstah rap is a product of peoples who were oppressed by the US system (and are still today) Most social programs designed to alleviate the suffering of the US population are made unavailable to those living in "the ghetto". Rap was originally positive and trying to change the system and when that didn't work and when gun strores and liquor stores began appearing all over the place (same thing the white man did to the native) they had no choice but to adapt and developed this self destructive culture. That's why hood movies alwys stress the ugliness of whatit is they are doing. It was an attempt to show the black youth the error of their ways and to put them back on the positive change track.

    2) The glorification of death and murder is the same attitude soldiers develop during war time. It is a human mechanism developed to allow us to cope with killing other human beings. Like allied soldeirs labelling Germans krauts, calling somalians skinnies and northerners Yankies during the civil war, dehumanizing the enemy is important to keep morale high among your troops. The music is an expression of that soldiers mentality. It's really a beautiful art form if you take it from that perspective but ****ty when you buy into the glorification and try to emulate it. (which is what 90% of teenagers in the states and canada do)

    3) Why does it not apply to Canada? Cuz our social programs rock. Everybody has equal oppurtunity here and there is no reason for people to be living the way they do in the states. It's not easy, I understand, but the fact is, to claim your life is harder than those in the US ghettos is stupid. Canadians have access to scholarship programs, welfare systems that are much more generous, Projects that look just as good or better than appartments like mine and on top of that Health Care. The only reason to give into that lifestyle is because you gave up trying or you WANT to live that lifestlye. The latter being the majority.

French rap is nothing new. It's actually a big business here and exported en masse to France (we're apparently more ghetto since we live next to the US and therefore more credible ). I agree with TSW that we have a RIGHT to sing about whatever we want to sing. But the nature of the music does not abide by our legal rights. It follows it's own code. Your word and your balls are all you got. And most Canadian gangstah's words are worth **** in the US so don't expect love from compton or South Suicide Queens.

My fellow rappers here in CAnada, if you want to rap ghetto, be prepared to get laughed at in the states cuz your ""thug life" can't hold a candle to what US "thugs" had and have to go though. No matter how good you spit.

Let me put it this way: walking from school one day I was mugged at knifepoint for $1.50 and a cherry coke. Of course I ran screaming like a little *****, but you really sort of expect that stupid kind of crap here.

i dont agree on many points.

original hip hop was not more positive than nowadays. talking about guns and money was theire since the first records.

you seem to mix thug and ghetto. its true that american ghettoes are worse than canadians, but theire is thugs, and "hard" people in canada too. if they want to rap about how hard their hood is , they are not really credible, but if they want to rap how gangster they are, they are not less credible than americans (who mostly create fictionnal gangster lifes). but yeah roi henook trying to emulate all the american hip hop culture trends is ridiculous. At least be yourself.

and canadian rap is not exported to france. (exept that ridiculous KMARO but it isnt rap music)

Believe me, it isn't a lack of social programs that keeps the ghetto in America ghetto. Cultural separatism, ie. defining "black" as "not white", is the single biggest issue that keeps things the way they are. It pretty much was the catalyst that allowed crack to establish roots deep into every community and work like a ****ing cancer from within. Social programs don't address the kid that gets his ass beat for "acting white" in school by getting good grades, nor do they get rid of the mentality that says actually having a steady job is for suckers. From what I have seen of Canada (limited to Vancouver, B.C. and Toronto, to be fair) they have some issues, but none quite so bad as most American cities. For the most part, the breakdown in basic community foundation isn't so bad that the most common primary group becomes your clique.
Most people grow up as part of one or more cliques without doing anything so much more as shoplifting, joyriding or minor league street fighting. Because in addition to their clique, they also have a primary group among family and extended family to provide guidance. When your mom is a literal crack whore, there isn't much guidance she can provide (except, perhaps, crack is *really* bad for you). When applied to individuals, it isn't so much a problem. But when you get whole communities where there is no primary grouping among families and the values of your clique (no more wiser than you) shape your own values, you get all sorts of stupid ****. Like artists making millions who shoot other guys because they shortchanged them $10 out of a $1300 drug deal. It's ridiculous yeah, but to them it coincides exactly with their values, you can't let anyone jerk you, because if you do, everyone will jerk you.
Enough of that **** from me. I got spared the worst of it anyway. Kiss my ass, Hilltop.

I never really thought of it in that context, more as a form of storytelling, like country is. Admittedly, the stories told are a helluva lot less socially acceptable, but I enjoy the way an artist (or artists) can put together an series of sounds to create a steady, repetitious beat, then string words together (in rhyme no less!) to tell a mostly comprehensible and, usually, at least partially true story.

Seriously, it isn't the social programs... I know a dude who started out a 22 year old with an eighth grade education and wound up with his master's at 30. He worked his fucking ass off, naturally, taking courses when and where ever humanly possible, but he did it. If white people seriously spent as much time thinking up ways of oppressing black people as some black "leaders" claim (**cough*Louis*Farrakhan**cough*), I would still be picking cotton for $0.00 an hour.

Yes. It applies to the rest of the world as well. A few Koreans found themselves fleeing Koreatown (LA) after they realized that if you talk **** in your songs about people who have guns, you might actually get shot. I would've thought the message was clear after Tupac and Biggie, but apparently some people need lead flying past their girlfriend's apartment to get the picture.

For every two Vanilla Ice-types, three dudes are telling the partial (or secondhand) truth and another one is dead-ass serious about gunning someone down in the doorway of their mom's house.

Social programs in the sense that there is more oppurtunity for the lower income families here than there is in the states. Here, the average poor kid goes to school with the middle class kid. 5$ Day care puts the middle class and the low-income kids in the same Day care. Sure the wealthy are still in their own world, but middle and low-income have a large grey buffer zone that's easy to obtain if your in a rough economical situation. Also the populations mentality here is very socialist so we're more prone to helping our fellow man out (to a degree). It's not perfect by any stretch of the mind and it's not like we're holding hands and talking windy walks with one another but there's a big difference between our policies and those of the US and I know for a fact that 90% of those is tough situations don't pull themselves out becasue they don't WANT to. there's a big difference when you deal because you HAVE to and you deal because you WANT to.

Another big difference between here and the US is most of the gang violence stays within gangs and you only join a gang if you want to. So really the risk factor for the population is technically very small. I live a block away from Walkley street in NDG, one of the "ghettos" of Montreal. NDGs not a ghetto really. It's a nice urban city with one street with crack houses and "cats on the block". The only gang violence is among the gangs and innocent bystanders are injured rarely... until recently. Gang's have been attacking senior citizens in recent months (bunch of punk asses). The bloods and the crips are claiming territory and montreal is trying desperately to compete with Toronto in crime rate. It's kinda sad. I think the hardest spot in Montreal is little Burgundy. that's the only place I'd second guess going to without my "crip home boys  ". (sarcastically for those who think I'm trying to flaunt my "connections")

The best part is is that all gangs (even bloods and crips) aren't like they are in the states. They're all puppet gangs for the Hells angels. You try to cut them out they'll erase any trace of your existence. They're the only gang that's REAL. they supply weapons, drugs and set up distribution channels for all of them. Everything from drugs to stolen Playstations, they're probably behind it. And they're probably the ones bolstering the "hood" life in Montreal since it's taking everyones attention away from them and boosting their sales in fire arms. All the "thugs" are puppets for white bikers...NICE!

You know, you guys can yell and rant all of the sociological tripe that you want, but there really isn't any way to change it. I mean, you're probably all right (my sociology classes agree with most of you), but it would take such a monumental force to change things, it's really not something I think I'll see in my life.

Music is music. Doesn't matter who makes it or who creates a certain style. It will inspire other musicians because thats just how music works. People will make what they think is good, and/or what will sell.

Why even bother getting upset about a Quebec rapper.

ot/ What an annoying movie btw. How many times did that 'TV' logo parental advisory blah with automatic fire have to play?!
