Ok, maybe not a puzzler but maybe someone can help me think this one out. My gas furnace has a standard 110v motor driving a large squirral cage type fan. The motor has a small pulley on it and the fan has a larger pulley. Do I make the pulley on the motor larger or smaller to make the fan turn faster?

Larger, however this will place a higher load on the motor and reduce it's duty cycle (load capacity/hour).
Make sure the wiring and fuse for the circuit is up to the task, and monitor it for heat (in the wires and motor) for safety reasons. If you go too large, chances are the fuse will pop before you melt the wires/motor, as the start up load is relatively high compared to a running load.
G'Luck on the increased CFM!

Larger pully on the motor to make it turn faster, but...If you make the air flow too fast it won`t extract the heat from the furnace heat exchanger and you`ll just increase the windchill facter in the house. :B

Hello, RUBE GOLDBERG, and thank you for writing to the Fix It Forum. You can make the fan do all sorts of cool stuff, but you’re trying to hang a small picture with a 16-penny nail.

If you suspect an airflow problem, chances are, these are the culprits.

Low intake or exhaust flow from:
Clogged fins in the air handler
Dirty filter
Vent vanes
Bearing drag on fan
Loose belt on fan

Air in equals air out. One trick is to bend open the directional air vanes on your vents. Sometimes this can make a big difference, sometimes not.

If you have dirt on the fan blades, that will reduce its ability to push air.

A piece if a duct might have come apart and is blocking the air flow like a piece of cardboard would if it were stick in the ducts.

NEXT WEEK! Lawn sprinklers. Learn how to control the flow and direction of your sprinklers.
