Projector shadows and alphas for trees

    i want to make a tree that casts a shadow and also shadows itself, which waves in the breeze...
    I've set up a tree with a projector, projecting a tree shdow. However It appears as if the shadow projects onto the alpha parts of the tree branch billboard.

    Any ideas? What format should I be using for the tree and shadow projectors?
    currently I have DTX5's with alpha made into a texture oscillator for the treebranch billboards and a DTX1 with a 127,127,127 grey bkg for the shadow (also made into a texture oscillator.) It appears to depend on which way the billboards are facing.
