program(s) to analyze video files to see if they're corrupt in any way?

My friend has an .avi with an xvid codec that he can't get to burn properly. Any ideas why? Also, are there programs available that would scan the .avi to see if it's corrupt/defective in any way?

generally if it finds any errors in the rendering of the file, it will tell you.
