Ok, so everyone knows that for the most part, ink cartridges are a HUGE ripoff, etc. But it seems like newer printers seem to use MORE ink than they did 5-6 years ago. I have an average epson inkjet printer, got ripped off on a $40 "high capacity" cartridge (epson cartridges have a chip in them that makes em unrefillable) and I've printed maybe 30 pages of BW text from it, it's halfway gone. Similar story with a couple other printers in my family recently. Anyone else agree with this conspiracy theory?

Conspiracy? Not really. Incredibly irritating? Yes. Inkjet ink is more expensive per volume than vintage champaigne.

This is why I use a laser printer.

Have you ever heard of the razor and handles business model? The new day model for it is the printer and ink model...

Companies maximise profits, news at 11.

Put it on eBay and buy a better printer afterwards.

HP used to only put a small amount of ink in the carts that come with new printers. They now have to tell you ( on the box) how much ink is in the carts.

    I have a large Epson 13x19. I think.

If you want to do any sort of mass color printing for any reasonable efficiency (laser, inkjet, impact, dyesub, lithograph, WHATEVER), buy a machine that uses separate CMYK cartridges.

    That is all.

I only print flyers for blind people. So I use no ink at all.

    I'm going to hell. :(

Here's what I've noticed with HP ink carts:

56/57 series: let's call them full carts
27/28 series: same carts, but about half-full
21/22 series: same carts again, but only a third full

All prices are about the same. And of course, a printer requiring the low-fill carts can't use the full-fill ones, even though they're exactly the same, because it locks it to the particular cart. A printer that requires the full-fill carts, interestingly, can use the half-fill carts no problem, but that's stupid. Solution? Get refill kits. If you're willing to put in the time and effort, refilling carts always gives you a full-fill cart no matter what, and it's cheaper anyway.

(Warning for Epson owners though, depending on your cartridge model, you may need to purchase a "chip resetter" to reset the cartridge's internal ink counter after it is refilled.)

Whenever i run out of ink i just buy a whole new printer at walmart. Its funny I can buy these cheap HP printers for about 35 bucks that come with black adn white and color cartridges when the cartridge itself costs 20-30 dollars.
