PLEASE HELP!!! (Part Two)

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. ***Last time on PLEASE HELP!!!***
Does anyone play Unreal anymore besides me???Anyway,This should be an easy one since it deals with the original unreal. Actually my question is two-fold
Ive been happily playind unreal for some time now and recently added the latest patch. Everything fine. Been a happy fragger for a few months now. All of the sudden the damn game wont even start. I get the little "unreal" sign on the screen, but no log in window. When i hit "ctrl+alt+delete", It says unreal not responding.
So I uninstall, then re- install with patch. Same thing. It starts up in safe mode though... So I repeat the process without the patch. It runs, but now I get no sound! What the ****??? ...PLEASE help. it is getting lonely around here without people to frag!!!
THANKS!!!!!
PS... Could it be that I need to update the sound card? How do I find out exactly what I have in my system? (The old man's computer).
I know its A3D but thats all.
Thanks again!

***FRom EL GORDO***
The "latest" patch is 226a, I have the link if you need it. The most recent version available for download from Epic is 225f. A3D sound works in 226a but not in 225f, so if you have 3D sound enabled but your audio card drivers are old and buggy then your system may crash when it tries to play the first sound.
Start the game in "safe" mode and go into advanced options and disable 3D sound, reverb and surround.
One other thing: Unreal tends not to like running on overclocked processors.

***And now Part Two of PLEASE HELP!!!***
Thanks ElGordo for answering. But I dont know if thats the answer entirely. I can play the game without the patch , but there is no sound. so the patch isnt making it silent. And Ive played it WITH the 225 patch for some time. It sounds credible though that that's why it could be crashing.I dont know...
Oh and by the way. We got this computer as a Package. I have little info about its internal components but I think its a sound chipset using A3D and not a card. It DOES use A3D though. I downloaded the 225 patch and made the game sound staticy for a while(until it decided to just not start), but seemed to run fine. Ive installed the damn game 4 times already with the same results. Oh well. Thanks again for the help. I'm downloading the patch now. Ill try that and THEN give up... ;0)
THANKS!!!
P.S. If ANYONE has ANY ideas I'm more than willing to hear them.(Yes, I've already tried jumping up and down on the hard drive /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif)

By the time you read this you will already have received my reply to your email, together with the link to the 226a patch. BUT - if your A3D sound is supplied by a motherboard chipset and not a soundcard then it is EMULATING A3D is software, not in hardware. Disable it! Go to audio properties, there should be a tickbox for "enable 3D sound".

These motherboard soundchips are notorious for being flaky - chances are you havn't got the latest drivers for it either. The best thing would be to disable the motherboard sound (usually via a jumper, sometimes via bios, sometimes (especially on later chips&bits mobos) both. Get yourself a decent PCI soundcard, my personal favorite is the Videologic SonicVortex 2 (supports A3D v3 and EAX v1), others swear by the Creative Live. You pays your money and you takes your choice....

OK thanks Gordo. Ill give it a try. Unfortunately I dont have creative control over the computer(not mine). Besides I dont have a clue as to what jumpers to change(computer was a package "deal". And I HAVE updated the A3D drivers to the latest. Oh well. such is life. But I was playing it fine before I added patches or drivers etc.
And the 226a patch did nothing to change this.
Again thanks!! I'm going to continue to repeatedly bat little balls of string around for my amusement...
Oh. here's a stupid question to shake your head at... What's the path to Audio properties??? If I knew this I probably would have had this problem fixed a long time ago. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Doubleclick "multimedia properties" in control panel, this gives access to your sound chip software controls.

If Unreal crashes, first try running in safe mode - this runs without your glide/D3D/OpenGL/Sound drivers. If it refuses to run, then basically you have a corrupt installation disk or you have no hope with your current PC. If it runs, then try running with 3D video on but no sound. If it runs fine then you know your sound is at fault. Otherwise try running in software video with sound, if this is OK then the fault is with your video.

Once you have narrowed doen the culprit you can start looking for solutions.

One other thing to bear in mind, if you are trying to run in opengl it may be best to switch to D3D (or glide if your card supports it).
