Hi,

Infiltration would be 'perfect' enough for me, if not for ONE thing: the weapon sound effects!!

They sound hollow and muffled, especially the shotgun and the M16. Have you heard the M16 in Half-Life mod Fist Full of Steel? It sounds like a cannon (not literally)! Boom! Boom! Boom!

The point is, that UT mods are fairly self supporting since they already have great bots, but nothing is more satisfying than using a high-powered weapon to frag bots. The M16 in Infiltration sounds like a coin tapping on a table.

Please Please Please just change the sound!! Make it sound really loud, booming and satisfying!! Something sophisticated with echo noise and so on. I mean, I enjoy Fist Full of Steel with its stupid bots just because it is so satisfying firing the weapons!! Infiltration will be perfect enough just with a more booming noise! (I know I am repeating myself, but I just can't stress my desperation to achieve a near-perfect mod).

Even if you have to sample Half-Life sound effects, DO IT! I assure you, there is nothing like fragging with a weapon, that sounds powerful.

v3 is coming out in Summer right? So, if possible, please make the better sounds in v2.8!!!!

--------

As an aside, you guys at Infiltration are doing a great job. Well done. If at all possible, here are some suggestions that will make your fantastic mod more realistic:

1) Bot team tactics - have a leader bot that can give instructions such as flanking and traps. Fragging the leader would be more satisfying then. Imagine a bot dressed like a Colonel or something... what a kick! They would have appropriate voices too.
2) Bots react to torchlights being shone in their area, to the sounds of their own teammates being fragged, and will try and trick you by feigning, or going the opposite way.
3) better military voices, such as commands and military lingo.
4) camouflage!! Bots should not automatically spot you, they should hide, look in your general location and try to look for you before actually seeing you. In other words, they know you are roughly there, but not exactly where. And this depends on what you're wearing and the background... this one I guess is a little tougher, but the bot should take a little longer to spot you if you are further away, and are in the dark etc etc..

One problem I have with playing Infiltration, is that I get the sense that bots are some kamikaze cyborgs. I would wish for some slower-paced, heart-stopping, suspenseful action. This would require bots to run-away more especially if they are almost dead, To avoid charging all the time, To take the time to hide behind a crate and take you out from afar, to blitz if cornered and to things that real soldiers might do.

(it would be good if we could throw the combat knife)

5) bots throw grenades in your general vicinity before charging you, especially if you hid to reload your weapon. They also run away from grenades (they don't do it very well in v2.75)

6) Greater use of ducking and crouched shooting like real military soldiers, by bots
7) Peeking!!! Ever played Rogue Squadron, Soldier of Fortune or SWAT3?? It is the most brilliant tactic (peek around a corner, exposing minimal body to shoot), and far more realistic than side-stepping.

------

I know my second set are a lot more difficult for you guys, and I can live without them, but I know that you all strive for realism, and I feel my second set of suggestions greatly enhance the realism of the experience.

At the very least, change the sound effects. I promise you it will enhance the experience 200%. Please do it for your next release and I will praise Infiltration sky high! It would put it above Counter-Strike in my opinion.

thanks, and once again, GREAT JOB GUYS!!!

sincerely,
AJY

First off, glad you enjoy Infiltration- we appreciate the praise!

Realize however that weapon sounds in real life, aren't always what you hear in games. Though our 2.75 and previous sounds aren't perfect, the 2.8/3.0 sounds have come a long way. Also, to put it bluntly, the UT sound engine leaves a lot to be desired.

As for the rest of your suggestions, ensure you read our roadmap first. A lot of what you suggested would require changes to the actual UT core code that we don't have access to. We will do our best to make the bots lifelike.

Great job!!!

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate your immense efforts 100%. I realise that you are doing all this out of a passion, and your attitude is great!

Thanks for telling me about the UT sound engine. I thought it was something like that, because even the base UT sounds sound a little hollow and dull, instead of the vibrant HL sound effects (sorry to make the constant comparisons, I'm sure you're sick of it, but like it or not, HL was the first to really capture a real-life feel of military weapons).

cheers for the great effort once again.

Answer... :)

Have I fired a real gun? Yes. To clarify:

1) You cannot drive on a computer. I drive very well, but 'terribly' on a computer
2) You can't really fly on a computer either. Taking 8Gs on a computer isn't really the same as taking it in real life is it? (okay, I haven't taken 8Gs but I have experienced 4Gs)
3) You can't really shoot on a computer! Using a real M16 with no scope, I am an accurate shooter - but I constantly get fragged on the internet.

So in saying that - no matter how real you simulate recoil or what-have-you on a computer - it will never be real-life right? I guess what I was trying to say, is that HL really captured the "thrill" of firing a real gun - that is - all that noise and fireworks. Other games captured guns, but they didn't capture the noise, nor the realism of having to reload the weapon and so on. Of course Infiltration is more realistic, but the sound of 2.75 didn't make it feel right - I am really looking forward to 2.8 though!!!

Further rants: you know what I think makes UT really the best FPS at the moment? Sure it may not be the 'best' as a standalone, but its inclusion of a highly flexible mod system with easily inclusive bots - makes it the most diversifiable FPS shooter. I can use the Inf 2.75 mod on any game, on any map. Try doing that with HL!!

cheers,

I really like the sounds. Of course, i have my sound setup make it so that footsteps rumble, but, you know.

One more for the books....

What does HUA stand for??

Anyway, rather than start a new thread, I have one more suggestion for the sound effects:

Is it possible for sound effects to sound louder and have some echo, when fired indoors? I'm surprised that UT does not do this, since a lot of other games do. That would really be nice.

Also, how are you able to change the sound effects so "footsteps rumble"???

thanks!!!!

Have you ever flown an X-Wing? Well, let me tell you, ducking is possible, but sidestepping is very difficult in that confined space.
