I found this on Usenet and decided to post it here. I don't know if this is actually going to help anyone having D3D problems, but I tried it and Unreal actually ran faster. First you'll need to have Unreal Tournament and Unreal both installed for this to work. Here is how to play Unreal with Unreal Tornament.
In the UnrealTournament.ini file change the following items: (make a backup first! if you don't, you can't play UT normally!)
Under change the LocalMap to LocalMap=un...ournament.ini file with your original backup.
