Hello there :)

I have recently started on a computer games tech course at uni, and we are using the unreal editor to create unreal levels. I have purchased the unreal anthology and installed only 2004 as that is what we have on the machines at uni.

I have the editor, but while working on some tutorials from the Mastering Unreal technology: the art of level design book, I have encounted a problem I cannot get my head round.

After rebuilding all my map (which is simply a box more than big enough for my player to fit in and be able to jump, double jump, dodge and dodge-jump etc) I have put in my player start and choose to play the map to check it works right.

When the game boots up, you get the "fire to join" message and instantly it starts counting down, without me clicking the fire button. When the countdown has finished and I should spawn into the map... I don't. To try and fix it, I went back and rebuilt my map, wondering if maybe by some small chance, this is where I went wrong, but alas, it didn't change anything. The game continues to start the spawn countdown as soon as the map has loaded and still I cannot spawn into the map. I have rebuilt my map, from scratch and tried again, and still the same. Even if I load one of the pre-made maps into the editor, such as "DM-DE-Grendelkeep.ut2" The same problem arises, and the game starts without allowing me to spawn into the map.

This is really driving me up the wall as I can't get any work done at home, could someone please help me fix this :(

Thanks in advance

Yeah, I've never examined why this happens sometimes. May be some lingering state somewhere.

So, press Esc to bring up the menu, then [Join] next time.

Okay, this is really bizzare now. First of all, I have to say, I never noticed the Join button when I pressed escape, mostly because I was a bit annoyed and was just quitting the game, rather than looking for a different way to join the game.

But I have tried that, and my character died as soon as he spawned. I know there are a fiew reason why this happens, not rebuilding the map being one of them, so I quit, went back to the ED and rebuilt the map then played it again, and for some dodgy reason, I can spawn into my map straight away now?

I was wondering is there something about this "lingering state" you mentioned that maybe you have to spawn into the map via the join button on the menu, to be spawned in to the game, before editor lets you spawn in directly after loading the map??

wierd :/ maybe some slight error in the unreal script?

anyway, thanks for your help :D its got me going again ^^

np--I haven't discovered a consistent pattern on the match start issue, but it's a local thing. I usually type exit in the console (tab key) to exit. For all I know, there could be a difference between exiting via menu and console.

While I'm at it:

Well, I quit either way, depends what mood I'm in :p as far as I know it doesn't affect the spawn problem. I have noticed however, that when ever I load my map, or any map, I have to click the play map button, then wait for the count down then press Esc and Join game.

After I have done that, I can spawn into the map as soon as I click the "play map" button in the ED. I spose this is just one of those things :/

and thanks for those other links :D I can see they'll come in handy in the future ^^
