I haven't heard any complaints about the Philips soundcards. I had a ton of problems with a Soundblaster that I ended up returning because Creative stated my problems were from not using a "Genuine Intel Processor."

Yeah, right!!

Some people with AMD processors and Via chipsets haven't had any problems with the Soundblaster cards, but there are a ton of people that have.

Something to consider if you have an Athlon.

I ended up getting a Santa Cruz. It is very comparable to the Soundblaster in performance and it has the same chipset as the Hercules Game Theater XP.

It was not due to having a "genuine intel processor".
It was due to having a VIA chipset.
There was a known problem with VIA chipsets and SBLives. It was mainly due to the SBLive pushing the PCI bandwidth harder than the chipset could handle. It was a VIA problem not a Creative problem.

This was fixed in version 4.32 of the VIA m/board drivers.

If you want EAX - which every game out there being developed usually contains in someway what with creative having licensed it to MS - the best card for it is the Creative cards.

Note that this card fully supports EAX 2.0

If you want to buy this card, look here

The reason why I'm not getting a SBLive is because of two reasons. I have an Abit kt7a which uses the 686B southbridge, which is the one that has problems with SBLive cards. Two, the SBLive was not designed with PCI Bus Mastering. That is why the card hogs the PCI bus and causes data corruption.

The data corruption is Creative's fault, the pops and crackling Via users get when using the SBLive is Via's fault.

I will admit, that if I didn't have this Abit motherboard, I would probably get an SBLive.
