That is really really sick. It's one thing to ask for your investment, but asking for sourcecode et al as if JoWood bought the license & stuff from Perception ? That really is on the EA-side of EVIL.

I guess JoWood wants money after they managed to kill one of their previous titles through mis-management ('Soldner' was published by JoWood and it was pretty buggy at release ... )

Ok so i got it wrong I thought Perception was making the game. I can understand JoWood asking for some money now to atleast cover costs.

Perception own the license, and make the game. JoWood is the publisher.

I doubt Perception owns the licence. JoWood would have to be total ****ing idiots to demand the source and seek another developer if they didn't own the licence. Then again, maybe they don't.

Well it sounds like perception would have completely screwed up the game anyways if they did manage to finish it. I was excited to learn that there would be a stargate game but after actually seeing the previews it looked like complete crap. I hope JoWood can find someone else to do. They didn't do anything wrong here, they just don't want to publish a crappy game.

I saw their footage, trailer, previews and it looks top notch and I mean higher quality than most of the mods out there. Their special effects and cinematics are all well done.

This ain't no cheap work, JoWood has some personal problems and they need to organize themselves and work at a better pace with Perception.

According to a post on the official forum there are some more official explinations

    1.) it wasn't canceled

2.) the contract between JoWood and Perception was disolved

3.) The main reason being that there was no way that the game would be finished Summer 2006. Further development would have cost another 2 million, with uncertain results as to the quality

4.) they are looking into the legal situation, but the game, code and lisence probably belong to JoWood

5.) they are also looking into ways to complete the game

I don't understand how JoWood can demand money back, it wasn't like they are paying for the product and it sucked, they were paying someone to develop it for them.

It's not like "here's the money, see you in a year!" and they found out it wasn't up to snuff, they had their mitts in the development at least a little and unless Perception fought them every step of the way and didn't hit major milestones, then JoWood has no right to their money back, they contracted these people to develop something and if they did everything they were supposed to other then make it good, then TS to the money.

Also asking for Source Code? They wouldn't do this unless they saw something there they could make money off of, forget the SG stuff, if they don't own it they do own the Source Code, but the a possible reason why they would want it is so they can still make a game off of it, change the art, change the story a bit, and you have yourself a game that might be a "inspired off of SG" version; but with that said, it couldn't have been that bad if they wanted to do that.

Pfft, idle speculation. JoWood has invested millions and is now in an situation where is it uncertain when or even if they will be able to profit from it. What rights they have or not their lawyers would know better than anyone here.
It seems doubtful that Perception could actually repay the money, JoWood may just use the claim as leverage.
Wild scenario: The game needs more time and money, JoWood lacks funds to extend development at the moment and wishes to put it on hold until they aquire new funds, prompting Perception to start looking for a new publisher. JoWood fears they may lose their investment and reacts by cancelling the contract in a preemptive strike.

As I said, idle speculation. ;)

God that sucks :| Hope the new people at perception that I know around from this community are ok and if perception goes down I hope those people the best. This sounds horribly bad. I already stated my opinion on the game from the previews on other threads so I will not go into that.

It is a shame what is happening.

@Spoondog: A little advice stay well away from the politics of the company you could get in heaps of trouble if you say something wrong.

Yea, I know... I'm just pointing out publicly released info, so people can know the [legal] facts before jumping to any conclusions :)

Erm, SG-1 is a great series, and Atlantis.. needs to improve from what i've seen.

I've been eager to see what stargate fans could reproduce in the Unreal engine, it has the power/ability to become a great feast for the eyes. Squad based gameplay in large scale warfare, spy missions, alien weaponry allied with human weaponry and some genuinely detailed plots makes for a great game...

    Or would do.

Shame, the 2k3 SG-1 mod looked nice too, until they released a trailer and it looked horrid.
