OpenMSL Project

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Yea... I have no clue were to put this because no section of the forums here can even
match. It doesn't fit under Development because its not any type of content or mod for
the Unreal Engine... It doesn't fit under any game names because it works with them
all... So I am just going to randomly place it here because it feels the most right...
Feel free to move it if you find a more fitting place...

Ok, i've been writing an a server/program that emulates and works exactly like the
Gamespy Master Servers. I have not tested it fully as of yet with UE3 or UE2 but it should
work with them perfectly.

What is different is that it is written purely in C and can be compiled on any platform/OS
including MacOS, Linux, OS/2, BSD, Solaris, Windows (All Versions but I don't think Windows
3.1 would work obviously), your phone, etc. and well work. It does not depend on
Unreal Engine in any way or uses any part of it, right now actually it compiles to
~30kb Linux executable on my computer.

The goal is to make this as compatible as passable with everything and add
some new features so it is pretty much like GameSpy MSL on crack. Like one
planned feature is to add support so it querys a list of other MSLs and then
combines all the servers in one listing and outputs it.

Yes its more stable then the built in Master Servers and will support any game
type even if you choose to make one up.. If you really wanted to. It will in Beta
that is.. Support all game types at once so you can run it for literally every game
ever made.

Any deranged individual can run a fully functional MSL separate from GameSpy
if they so choose... Like if you wish to seperate your gaming servers from
the usual listings and have a private network you can, etc.

So any thoughts, suggestions, rants, comments, etc?

And its Open Source :D

Note: Yea the Alpha version sucks and is limited its Alpha... Only works on POSIX
compliant OSs (Not Windows) atm. It will eventually work on Windows...

so the gist of this is you're making something that would potentially let us bypass gamespy in UT3?

Not just UT3... Everything to be specific...

It is now at OpenMSL.net

In about two days master.openmsl.net will be active running OpenMSL of course.
I don't intend it to be a replacement for GameSpy but more for testing and debugging
but everyone is free to use it.

Wow. Thats really cool! The possobolities with that program running of server blow my mind. You could make some bad ass web interfaces to look through servers.

I am totally all ears.

Sounds like a cool project! I prefer to play offline so I never have to deal with GameSpy but it sounds like there might be some advantages for those people who do play online.
