Here are my thoughts as I posted on the SkW message board - and a URL
Someone at the PlanetUnreal Forums found a leaked version of Epic's Unreal patch 226a. Here's the URL:
http://kaktus.punkt.pl/incoming/files/patche/unreal_2.26a/unrealpatch226a.exe
It is a genuine file (not a fake or a Trojan) that apparently was on Epic's site for a short time. Here's the lowdown of what it does:
Direct3D Rendering
Apparently it is much improved, especially for GeForce users (I don't know, I use Glide)
Glide Rendering
Players who upgraded to 224 or 225 may remember that Epic introduced code to scale down the detailing on meshes rendered further away to improve framerate. They may also remember that it was overactive and blurred things like Clips etc. In 226 the blurring has gone and meshes are rendered at full clarity...
Fog looks a bit odd. Could just be my PC.
Audio
Support for A3D etc. is back as is reverb. People who played the retail version of Unreal may remember the superb echoing effect in open areas like outside the Sunspire... the effect that vanished in 224. Well, it's back, after a fashion, but it's the same time lag in all reverb zones and sounds extremely odd...
Net play
Not many improvements since 225f. Minor tweaks of server operation and console commands.
Recommended download if you like single player Unreal. You can easily turn reverb off...
