Woooo got my new lens :D
Sigma 30mm F1.4

Initial thoughts, solid build, heavier than it looks like it should be!
Have fired off a few quick shots in my house and judging from the LCD screen on my 450D the shots have a lovely bokeh on :)

I'll be getting the 40D here pretty soon (next month).

I'd like to go with the 450D so I can get an additional 2 lenses (a macro and a telezoom) but I think I'll stick with the 40D and a single lense for now.

So, I'm looking at this site here http://www.photographyreview.com/cat/lenses/35mm-primes/canon/PRD_84804_3111crx.aspx

I want to get the Macro lense because I like to take those kinds of photos. But now I'm seeing a "$40 lens hood. $125 tripod mount. Hunts once in a while in low light."

What's a lense hood and tripod mount? I have a tripod for the 40D. The kind that you set it ontop of and do photos with (non-freehand) Is this a different tripod?

The lens hood will be something looking like this - From my understanding hoods generally just block out glancing light to reduce glare in shots. I rarely use one at the moment, England is rarely bright enough for it to make a difference xD

As to the tripod mount, I would imagine is a fitting that goes on the lens (its quite a bulky lens) so it can be mounted on a tripod. The idea being the camera+lens would be supported from the middle meaning less strain on the tripod in comparison to using the camera mount where there would then be a lot of weight hanging over.

Nah neither are vital initially, just things I imagine you might look into in the long run if you get into it :)

One thing that is slowly sinking in is just how much cash you need to get a decent set of gear. I'll be eyeing up some Addon flashes at the weekend or next week. Need to see if the Canon 430ex can actually justify the price of over £200

Te Henga Beach in New Zealand. One of the few black sand beaches there.

So this is one of my first ventures into panoramic photography... please criticize all you like =)

Good first try. Did you stitch them together or just crop?
Also.. Level out your horizon. Both shots are slightly tilted.

argh, I've always had problems with my horizon being tilted. I always try to make a mental note about it too lol. For the pano, I stitched about nine photos together with a program I found online.

No worries, if your using photo shop CS2 or above simply take advantage of the Lens correction tool. (Filters -> Distort -> Lens Correction) Use the straighten tool and the grid once in there. Take note that the "Angle" field changes as you use this tool. You can change the angle in order to make minor adjustments without having to start over again.

After that is done you will notice that you have created transparency or a solid colored background when you rotated. No worries, simply use the zoom tool. 1-3% usually does the trick. You will be cropping when you do this.

I'm not sure if the term I'm going to use here will be correct (after all English isn't my native language), but the meaning behind this grip is that it allows the user to produce a 'lever-effect': the right hand guides the direction of the sword, while the left hand tilts the sword. This enables you to swing the sword MUCH faster than one who doesn't know how to handle swords would. Also, from my experience, swinging the sword the 'right' way will result in the typical "swoosh" sound that is characteristic to this weapon; if you don't use the 'lever-effect' technique, you will hear nothing at all.

This reminds me of a movie where a bad guy gets desparate and attaches a chain between his armour and the sword (seems useless but nevermind). This was probably to support it in the same way you the right hand does in your description.

I suppose disarming someone involves turning an opponent's sword or hitting it with sufficient force so the right hand loses it's grip.
