    Original, before significant post processing.

So I went to shoot some photos for my older brother and his family. I'm still working on the photos and at first I was actually turned off quite a bit by the apparent lack of sharpness my flash produced. However, after using some of the different sharpening techniques from this thread, and also a little fiddling around of my own, I've reached some pretty good results with one of the photos. It's significant because it has sort of opened my eyes to the fact that no matter how blurry a photo is and even a little noisy, you can still make something very good of it.

I found Israphel's sharpening method to be very very strong. I'm quite surprised by what it can do. Thanks a lot for that, Israphel!

Now I'm going to work on all the other photos, and hopefully I can have a nice batch of photos done for my brother :)

    Rock on!

I believe that if the content in the photo is good, motion blur, slightly out of focus, excessive noise can be dealt with. I'm not advocating poor photo taking techniques, but I do believe that there is usually a way to make something excellent from a special shot despite its technical flaws.

I don't understand how people take pictures like that. How do you absorb that much light to get all those stars to show without having either the stars streak or the landscape blur from mounting on an equatorial telescope?

You get a special camera that can catch more than the visible spectrum of light.

Bull****, that was taken by a Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

Exposure time 37 seconds. How the **** did either the stars or trees not streak.

    I have the same problem.

Some things say a wide lens means less streaks, but. that's at 50mm. So there goes that idea.

Well the stars definitely have streaks in that photo. The trees don't have streak, since there is no wind.

Also, judging from how the stars streak, it is clear that the photographer pointed the camera in just the right direction, to avoid streaking as much as possible. Notice how streaks are more prevalent on the far right and a little on the left too, but the middle is more or less streak free.

The answer is that this person simply has some experience and maybe took a lot of photos, before a mostly streak free photo was shot.

I'm not sure if my monitor isn't calibrated anymore, you did a really bad job at white balance, the kid is dead or the kid is choking on something but she looks purple to me.

So please say you did a bad job at white balance because I don't want to recalibrate my monitor again.

Generally the stars won't streak on an exposure of about 40 seconds. Here's a shot I did at 30 seconds (ISO1600 and f2.8) and you can see the stars in the corners starting to blur a little, but in the centre there's no movement at all

As for the trees streaking.....that would only happen if they moved in relation to the camera. If you want to see some crazy sky photography like this, check out this video http://vimeo.com/16369165

Correct! I have no idea about how long I'll stay here. For the time being, I'm settled, and since I moved again within the city some weeks ago, I'm rather content with the area I'm living in. Now I just gotta get through the Berlin winter and all will be well.

How I wish I could see the night sky with that many stars. Most are blocked anyway by the citylights.
Where exactly was this taken? I mean sure it was in Portugal, but where?

That's stunning. You have an excellent eye for photography. I've showed your website to some people and they were very impressed with your work.

Well I was talking about the trees streaking in the case that they might have mounted on an equatorial mount. I guess you have to be away from any towns to get those kind of shots.

Do you have a higher resolution version of that? I'd like to mess with it.
