@Rambowjo

I live in California. Actually most of the things I think you're talking about are on properties that my friends own.

Here's a picture of the whole enchilada.

OK so I recently put my wide angle lense I still had from my EOS 50 analog cam on my EOS 1000d. It would crap out with the error "connection to lens lost, clean contacts" most of the time. I nailed it down to being the stop controll. If its at lowest the lens works fine. But as soon as I change it, the camera will shut down with that error. I checked back with the EOS 50 and there it works fine, I can change the stop without any problems. I cleaned the contacts numerous times but it doesn't seem to help. Any ideas? The lens is a Sigma Zoom 18-35mm.

Assuming this is the only lens that gives you the error on your camera, I can assure you that it is your lens at fault.

Years ago Sigma believed that they could make lenses to fit a canon mount without having to license it. Canon was not happy about this. Then Sigma accused Canon of intentionally making it so their lenses would not work properly on their new cameras. These where lenses that worked just fine on previous cameras. Obviously there where some company issues going on. The air seems to have been cleared up since then.

Good news, there are fixes available. Users have to take their lenses into a shop where each 3rd party lens had to be "rechipped". Although not an expensive repair it is one that you will need in order to use your lens in the future.

I recommend contacting Sigma support first. Get an estimate. If the price isn't right, contact your local camera repair shop. Probably wont be cheaper... but you may get lucky. Keep in mind that the 18-35 sigma is a very inexpensive lens and may not be worth getting it repaired.

Ah, OK. Thought it would be the lens.
I'm not really using it much anyways. Mostly because I'm too lazy to swap lenses as my 28-200 wors in most situations. I think I'll rather spend the money on a macro lens, I've been wanting one of those for a while now.

edit: I checked on Sigma's homepage. Looks like my Lens is too old and they won't rechip it.

Anyways, here's some photos:

I really like how the water came out on this one. The overexposed spot in the clouds looks a bit off tho.

First really good picture I've taken with my lensbaby composer. It produces some really sharp results sometimes, it's just a little difficult to work the focus :p

Documentary style wedding photography is still rare here, and there is a niché for people who actually don't like posing (I can understand this, both me and my wife hate posing and at our wedding I gave my camera to a friend who's a part time photographer and asked him to shoot whatever he liked). For good wedding photography here, you pay and arm and a leg, so I've kind of aimed at a niche of affordable documentary style photography. I'm not comfortable directing people in poses, and I marvel at your ability to work with models, but i've never come at photography from that angle, so it feels strange for me.

First of all, thanks for all the info. Your biz model is very different from mine and it looks like you have found a few areas that are profitable. I have done gallery shows just to test the market and never made any $$ off of them. The feedback was great, even got some folks who where offended but it was very disappointing in a monetary sense. I always thought that people are more likely to purchase a photo of an animal or landscape than a photo of a person you don't know. I suppose it was good for advertising. That is something that I cant measure.

From the sound of things I think i might be able to successfully set up a wedding biz in your area and do quite well. There are people here who will pay 2-5k for a wedding.. but with the economy down we are having to shoot for volume to make up for the monetary loss. It's tough! Around here weddings rarely happen outside of the summer. There are only so many Saturdays and Sundays in the summer and if we can fill the summer up with clients we aren't doing too bad.

Two shots taken at the end of last weeks wedding:
