Question. Bright ass mid-day photography... I know it's not the best idea, But is there any way to avoid the sky/clouds looking nuked when shooting a darker colored subject? Polarizing filter maybe?

edit - case in point:

- Polarizer can help
- HDR can help out a lot if you don't get carried away with the effects. Done properly nobody will ever know what you did.
- Embrace the intense light. Use it to create simple backgrounds.

Shoot in raw and under expose it. Then bring up the exposure in Photoshop and everything will be dandy.

Yea I've just recently tried out the noise reduction in CS5, and it is indeed quite good. Some of my 1600ISO pictures can actually be salvaged!

She is from Taiwan, though very Americanized. I used a very small fan, its all I had at the time. I'll have to get a larger one that has its own adjustable stand so nobody has to hold it. Fan + Hair shots are fun. You never know what you will get!

Question for you. I'm thinking of getting a 85mm f/1.8 lens. Has anyone had any experience with them? Can you post some examples of work taken with them? I'm trying to outweigh the pro's and cons of getting one, especially as I'm no longer taking photos as a full time thing now.

It depends on what format you're using.

On a full format dslr the 85mm is 85mm just like on film, but a smaller sensor like the Nikon DX would make that a 127.5mm and it would turn a great portrait lens into a small telephoto.

I have a 85mm 1.8 and it's just amazing to use. Having such a fast lens really makes a HUGE difference at dusk and other low light situations where on a slow lens I'd need to up my ISO.

I just recently posted this one, but it was taken with the 85mm, so here it is again.

1/40, f3.2 @ ISO 2000.

Sure I could have dropped the ISO a lot and just used 1.8 but it's almost impossible for me to get a hand held shot at 1.8 and get it in perfect focus.

1/320, f8 @ ISO 200.

Alright, I uploaded this pic straight from a nef raw file conversion so it's completely untouched and the file size is like, 7mb. Prime lenses are sharp, super sharp, look at the detail in her hair and this was with my shaky hands and no other support. And I wasn't even that close, hence why people love 85mm as portrait lenses. The only problem is that skin imperfections really start to show up, so just be careful if you're shooting portrait.

*Edit You have to save the penguin picture to your hard drive, imageshack resizes it for some reason and I couldn't find a way to get the image back to 2848x4288 and you lose a bit of the sharpness/quality with the resize. :(

Lol have you never seen a photo of me? I airbrush to death anyway. ;) Excellent sharpness though, as you've already said, and I like the perks of being able to use it in low-light situations. do you think it'd make a good lens for gigs and stuff?

Also, what's the DOF like? I've got a 50mm but it doesn't give me a good enough blur in the background that I'd like. I'm all about the creamy bokeh.

Yes, I have some stuff photos from a dance party but I don't have them here right now. While everyone else was using flash to compensate for their ****ty slow zoom lenses, I was snapping away capturing people dancing with only the ambient floor lights. The results are amazing tbh.

DOF on 85 is better than 50 but it's not omgsuperdelicious different. You'll definitely be able to make your target pop out more and have the backgrounds smoother, but really the bokeh depends on your lens and aperture.

I should probably find some example shots of mine that are using the 50mm 1.8, since that's much closer to what you'll get on film. 50mm on DX is 75mm iirc.

BTW If you really want amazing bokeh, find a lens that supports focus control. What it does is control how smooth or sharp the out of focus areas of the image are. I've been using this lens for a month now and it's the greatest lens I've ever used.

It's expensive but its image quality and durability is that of the best lenses made. It's sharp even at f2 from edge to edge and it's solid metal unlike all my other lenses. It's perfect in every way except that it's rather heavy. It weighs just as much as my camera plus my sb-600 speed light, carrying it around all day is not fun when I'm trying to just relax but I'd take that inconvenience and have that lens any day on a serious shoot.

Also, I got asked to enter a photo contest. I kind of hate those things as they are a popularity contest, but please vote for me since the people with the most 5 star ratings get the most views. You can check my profile there out here.

LOL
There are about a million photographers doing that contest and the only true winner is the guy who set up this website and charged photographers $10 for each photo upload. I wish I had thought of it first. Cha $$Ching$$ Still.. good luck :)

I like your cell phone photo. I don't think it would look as good with a real camera. Its more simplified.

Yeah, I like it too. It reminds me of this one artist, I can't remember their name, but they took these great photographs of people with a throw away 35mm from walmart.

Yeah, I signed up just for the **** of it. I only uploaded 4 photos since nobody is really going to look at more than that. Also, most of the people that entered are terrible. My favorite are the over done HDR shots.

dudee bba, cell phone shots are awesome, i took so many good ones this past week

They can be fun, but they aren't going to age too well. I just like them for dicking around.
