Yeah but HDR, specifically in games, is made to simulate the human eye adjusting to light when walking outside from indoors or vice vera. It's the bloom that covers up lighter colors that you want to hate... and the fact some games set the threshold and levels way too high. The HDR effect itself is cool, it's just that bloom is abused.

HDR will probably go out of fashion eventually.

I've yet to see it IN fashion... as i said earlier. I've rarely met anyone who actually defends it. It's been fashionable to hate it for atleast the past five years.

It will always be popular with beginners and amateurs for as long as it's easy to do and they're easily convinced that that's a quick way to take an insanely apocalyptic sunset photo.


I wouldn't call these photos inherantly bad just because of the method used to make them...

The point of HDR is that you have total control over the image. It doesn't always have to look ludicrous or "dreamy".

As i say i'm not pro HDR but all i see is the anti HDR bandwagon wheeled around all the time, it's tedious and irrelevant. I can't imagine there are more HDR photos in the world than bad non-HDR photos...

Anyway i'll be quiet now.

Official Team HsE Six-man LAN Party. "Get fatter on spring break" edition.
Nothing particularly amazing or artsy, just probably one of the better shots that came out of the night. Barely did anything with it in photoshop. It just seemed like an opportune time to experiment with my friend's new wide-angle lens. I'm in the foreground with the red setup and computer on floor. And no, that's not a deformed doobie next to my mouse.

HDR will probably go out of fashion eventually. I've never bothered with it as it just seems like one of those 'I'm not very skilled so I'll process the **** out of my photo's things. It can be good if it isn't overdone though like in El JuaKo's photos. It actually looks good there because it isn't over exaggerated and looks fairly natural.

The overprocessing of imagery can be applied to a single exposure. Sure, it isn't as effective, but it can be done. The overprocessed effect isn't the result of HDR photography. HDR photography leaves the viewer with an image that looks more natural and has greater depth due to the higher range of colors/light information derived from the merging of multiple exposures of the same shot. HDR photography and post-processing correctly applied looks phenomenal.

HDR photos will be around for a long time, but it will be the overprocessed fad that will fade away.

I would have said that I liked it but I can't seem to find anything in focus. Maybe it's my eyes, but the parts that should be in focus look blurred not due to being shot wide open, just out of focus. It kinda hurts when I look at it.

Maybe I should've made the picture smaller, like 60%. One of the ways I like to do post processing is making an extra layer from the original image, apply a small gaussian blur to that layer and then set the blend mode to "Multiply" and adjust the opacity to somewhere in the 40-60% range. It creates a kind of soft blur.

e: took another look at the RAW file, the petals are actually not really in focus, but rather the stilks :/

I think people dislike HDR because its so often poorly done. I'm a huge fan of taking HDR shots and then mixing them in with normal exposures. All I really want from the HDR processing is the extra detail where things are normally under or overexposed. If i can pull off a stunning image that has you scratching your head "how?" then its a good image. Usage of 100% HDR = fail. 10% or 20% = win. Its a tool to be used, not relied upon.

Yeah but some people feel like those last two images are the way to go for when you want people to say "Wow! How?". Typically people who aren't into photography... or at least the actual taking of photos.

Do you seriously just walk around with a group of people a couple days a week and just take photos? Wouldn't it get old eventually, as in there are only a couple interesting places to go in your area and doing the same thing with the same people so often? Also, do you hang out with your friends in any other ways or have any other hobbies? How is it that all your friends are into photography, doesn't that get old?

It all seems kind of monotonous.

It's usually about once a month or so. Tokyo is the biggest city in the world with a population that is larger than all of Canada. Also, it's very dense, so there are so many places to go and shoot here that I have not yet seen them all and so many more are always popping up. This place is by large better than NYC for photography.

Well, most of my friends here are really into photography, so it's what we do usually and it's fun. It's not just snapping photos, but trying new techniques new cameras etc. that keeps it fresh and fun. We also like to eat food, so we go to new restaurants all the time which also falls in well with shooting. It might get old for some people, but not for us. We love it.

Going around and taking pictures of things with your friends is a really fun thing to do. You should try it

I'd imagine that there is a lot of suspense in taking pictures of lightning with your friends, competition too. Tornado, maybe a bit risky

Since my 1300mAh and 1600mAh Rayovac NiMH and my 1850 mAh Energizer NiMH batteries are aging and no longer hold the longevity that they once enjoyed, I just ordered some POWEREX 2700mAh NiMH batteries. I also have an old Rayovac PS1 charger, and want to replace that too. What battery charger do you guys recommend?
