Hi there folks, I'm trying to spread the word about a new mod that is currently in development for UT2K4 (and FarCry) - Blue Moon Rising.

It is a strictly co-operative online game, where teams of five player controlled marines fight it out against the hordes of zombies that have taken over the world, 50 years into the future.

Several design elements make this a very team-focused game (communication, weapon limits and combat), but we'd like to think that the idea of blowing bits off of zombies appeals to everyone reading this as well.

Visit the site at...

...and please please please leave some feedback on the forums for us, so we can make it a better game!

Thanks,

Andrew Smith

Team Leader.

And in split screen

Just curious, how do you plan on accomplishing this, at least, in UT2003/4? (don't know much about Cry)

Also, why is every weapon a "Heckler & Kock"? and why all projectile weapons? The mod is in the future, why not some futuristic weapons?

Either way, done right this is a promising idea. If you can pull together the whole co-op through a story idea, you'll have a nicely unique mod. Good luck on this!

JamesKilton : This is a feature we'd try to implement if we ever got it made into a commercial game.

BMR is not a realism-mod like CounterStrike or anything of that ilk, but having said this we do want things to stay in the realm of the 'possible', so no silly beam guns or anything like that.

The reason they're all H&K is that they seem to have some pretty awesome weapons coming out (the XM8) and as they have said it will be a modular weapon - why not get everything going that way... :)

Daedalus and Merc248 : This a futuristic (slightly) mod, therefore we are taking a little artistic license.

glad you like it enought o comment, though - go register on our forums if you have any suggestions to make, too - all feedback is taken seriously and will be accounted for - the re-design of some of the weapons is a case in point...

Thanks!

Probably not, no.

Even if we just end up changing the names - it doesn't matter what they're called - surely the weapons themselves are what matters?

We have:

assault rifle
pistol
shotgun
sniper rifle
flame thrower
grenade launcher
heavy machine gun
riot shield
grenades

Is that not enough?

Eh?

The story in this game...

Well it doesn't make any sense, in fact, I don't think it makes any sense full stop.

The moon has been given a blue tinge from the size and volume of the viral particles in the air - about one quarter the size of a polio virus cell.

Ok first of all, that would mean there is an EXTREMELY large amount of these in the air. An EXTREMELY large amount, like insanely large, because viruses are only nanometers long (10e-9!). Also viruses do not have a 'cell', they are particles, essentially just some DNA stuck in a protein capsid.

The Omega Strain is an unknown combination of viral and fungal mutagens

That also, makes utterly no sense. You could say it is a fusion of some viral and fungal DNA, but I don't think the above sentence makes any scientific sense at all.

A parasitical virus

All viruses are parasites, this is because they always harm host cells they are trying to infect.

it is known that a mouse might be affected in such a way as to make it venture out in the open more during daylight, increasing the chances of its death, and therefore transference of the virus to a new host – the mouse’s predator.

Viruses are incapable of this, but things like helminth worms and nematodes can alter host physiology and cause such changes.

The fungal aspect is key to the virus’ spread as generally these types of highly virulent virus are the weakest

This again, makes no sense. Are you implying this virus is also a fungus? Or is this a pathogenic fungus?

Viruses and pathogenic fungi are not the same thing.

The fungal attributes mean that this virus can be transferred via touch, air, water or anything other medium.

The skin is typically capable of blocking every pathogen that can be named, except if it is somehow damaged such as from a cut or similar abrasion. This again, doesn't seem to make any sense.

After a short while, the carrier’s nervous system will overcome the infection and destroy the virus.

Eh? The nervous system is extremely vulnerable, once someone is infected in their nervous system they are as good as dead. The immune system is unable to affect such pathogens that manage to get into there. Most viruses don't target the nervous system because these cells to not replicate often, limiting the viruses spread, unless it has other targets (such as chickenpox, which can attack nerve cells and a wide variety of other tissues).

None of the above really makes any sense at all, from a realism stand point.

[Incidently, I am an immunologist]

OK, so I meant to say the immune system - but as for the rest of your post - its a sci-fi story, its not meant to be real - its a game. Zombies don't exist either, but in BMR they do.

I do appreciate you pointing stuff like that out, though, and if you could perhaps email me (andyjohnsmith@hotmail.com) then we could work a more acceptable background - all the knowledge I had was gained from asking a biology teacher, so it was all in layman's terms.

I'd also appreciate if you could post comments on other aspects of our mod in the forums at www.bluemoonrising.co.uk .

Thanks again!
