New laptop tips?

My laptop needs to be replaced. It's been a fine machine for a lot of years. I think I've had it for about 5 years or so. Haven't had a bit of trouble with it until now. The power plug broke and now I have taken it apart and soldered some wires to the board where the plug goes in and ran then out the back with a new socket on the end. While doing that I broke the connection where the CPU fan goes so now it must sit on a USB chill pad at all times or it overheats.

So, I will certainly be buying another Toshiba but I'm a little lost on which CPU's are good. Should I go Intel or AMD? What's a Centrino? I assume higher numbers mean faster CPU? I've been told at least 4 Gigs of RAM is needed.

I've accepted the fact that I will soon be using Vista.

Well, I went to Best Buy and looked at some Toshibas. I don't like the new touchpads. They are flush with the wrist rest and even though it has a texture to it, I have a hard time with it not being able to positively feel the edge of it with my calloused fingers. I also don't like that they moved the power plug to the side and they haven't improved it for durability at all.

I don’t know no nothin’ about laptops, or daily fiber, or window screen. But I do know how to weld and I say weld your old laptop. Welding usually fixes anything that’s metal and broken.

You ever see pictures of those birds that stand on one leg and sleep? They can do that because they have a metal stent in their leg. How do you think the stent got there? Welding!

So there you go. You should be able to weld your laptop because a bird can stand on one leg.

Well, I bought a new laptop. It's an HP. It cost 9 million dollars and is powered by a built-in nuclear reactor. It's so fast it does stuff before I even know I want to do it. The coolest part: It has a tissue dispenser.

the funny thing, you can get XP on a laptop, but its a custom order and you have to pay extra for it.

Just get a media center type. i look at anything over $700 Is a waste. THATS WHAT A DESKTOP IS FOR!

I picked up a refurbished DELL XPS gamer unit from the dells outlet store. It was less then half price of new and said it was a scratched unit. But I can't find a mark on it. Their selection of units changes by the minute, I just kept refreshing the page until the one with the amount of memory, HDD, 17" screen, video card and price I wanted before I bought it. Vista has been really solid. Only had one issue with a R/C helicopter simulator that was XP only, so it was no surprise. Always had a distaste for the name brands, but this XPS has been awesome.

It looks just like this one. But no cup holder. It seems small because not only could I not get the cup holder but I couldn't get the optional radiation shielding for the nuclear reactor. I just have to keep the kids away from it. I have enough kids anyway. I'm sure I'm sterile already. O well.

now that you've purchased your laptop, i will answer the questions you posted eariler. A centrino is a dumb-down chip. probably to bring the price down, or to save tin cans.

that other question you had: yes

shouldn't have got vista; it has a V in it. Should have ordered one with windows 95 because they've had plenty of time to work out all the bugs. Remember, even advanced aliens use Win 95.

Wait a minute. I'm going to get dumb for using this computer? That could be a problem for me. Long story.

I knew about the 'v' thing but didn't realize it would be this bad. I might have to downgrade to Windows 3.1 or maybe even MSDOS. I'm sure there are zero bugs in those by now.
