Anybody else played around with the new HL patch? I have, and let me tell you, it's pure crap. Since everything is now client-side, it gives HPBs an incredible advantage over everyone else. In reality, I might be dodging around like a mofo, but to the HPB I'm frozen in my tracks, and he can line up his sites and fire at his leisure. Once his game finally unfreezes, his computer tells the server I'm dead, and, dispite the fact that he never actually hit me, I keal over. So much for my expensinve cable modem...

You need to download some cable modem tweaks. It'll really improve your performance.

I played CS on a lan server yesterday and let me tell you it sucked. At first we thought that it was the internet players that where causing all of the jumpiness in the game so we started a nother server with just the 8 of us. Well it still sucked and it didn't get any better. I don't know what they did but they are going to have alot of pissed off people. I

The jumpiness is not really due to ping but the fps you're getting. Yiah, no shit man.

I'm running an Athlon 700, 256 megs of ram, geforce 256, cable modem, and valve decides to limit my fps to 20-30. wtf?

Jesus Christ, people with poor systems, whine all you want, but christ man, I don't spend 5000 on a computer and then some Johnny Shit Cakes *FORCES* me to be on par with somebody that has a e-machines tower with a 33.6 software modem and a free MSN account. WTF?

I tried looking in the CS forums for some (if any) help, but unfortunately, the coding seems to have been made by 3-year-old Guetemalan children forced into labouring over HTML code and CGI scripts by repeatedly mashing their faces against a keyboard under the threat of getting "the paddle."

I think the new patch is excellent. I get better ping, and framerates.

However, there is a compatibility problem with ATI cards.

Not sure why others are having problems, but there are a number of tweak guides coming out that will seriously help your framerates. I'll see if I can find a link to one.

I just got an email from Sierra Tech Support basically admitting fault. They informed me they're already working on a new "mini"-patch to fix everything they broke.

Really all I got was a wack email that was pure auto response garbage. Still NO HL on my machine either due to the issue presented in the patch. Bad Mojo could you send me the email or post it here? realmaps@planetunreal.com
Thanks

Well, I'll post it here so everybody can see Sierra's wonderful solution, as said by Jeff:

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>Thank you for contacting Sierra Tech Support,
You're welcome

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>We are addressing this issue in the next patch.
Admissions to guilt kick ass.

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>For now, try running the
game in Direct 3D 640x480.
Well Jeff, there's one problem with that. Direct3D 640x480 would be a viable solution, if only it wasn't so ugly and chunky that I couldn't see anything. I may as well run it in software 320x240. I think I'll just wait for the next patch, which will hopefully be released very soon, and you can ignore everything else in the patch you wanna make just so you can fix every single person's bloody problem.

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>If you encounter any other problems then feel free to contact us again.
Please include the entire thread of messages for our reference if you
need to reply back.
Will do, Jeff

Thanks Jeff. A game company finally admitting fault has made my life complete.

Old games with really good netcode.

Anyone remember playing Descent 1? In that game, he who has the fastest computer wins. I didn't believe it till I saw it. I once played the game over a lan on a pentium 233 and a 486 DX2-66. My friend who was using the P233 flew faster and fired more rounds/sec. than me. Needless to say, he kicked my ass. Not like todays games that pulls everyone to the same level. What we really need are servers that reject people if they don't have a fast enough connection / low enough ping. They can go play on another server just for them.

Thats probably cause they didnt have good system of accepting data. Sort of like playing ancient games that don't time splice. i think that's the word.

About the HL code and limiting the FPS, it's prolly cause the frames were synced. I dont play HL, but an overinformed fried of mine does. Damn he knows everything.
