Hi all. I have heard about this military shotgun that is callled the JackHammer. Does this weapon exist and if so are there any sites with info on this shotgun, or does anyone already know something about it? Gryphon have you heard of the JackHammer? Thanks.

"The Jackhammer is an automatic, gas-operated, 12 gauge shotgun which uses a pre-loaded rotating cylinder as its magazine. The cylinder has grooves incised on its outer surface which are engaged by a stud on an operating rod, so that as the rod oscillates it rotates the cylinder; it is very similar to the system of cylinder rotation used by the Webley-Fosbery automatic revolver. The Jackhammer barrel floats, and is driven forward by gas pressure after the shot is fired. It is then returned by a spring giving movement to the cylinder operating rod. The significant point about this movement of the barrel is that it disconnects the barrel from the gas-tight connection with the cylinder, allowing the cylinder to be revolved to index the next round, and then, on the return stroke, reseals barrel and cylinder together." (From Jane's Security and CO-IN Equipment 1994-95)

Ahh yes, the Pancor Jackhammer.

This was a full auto shotgun in bullpup configuration with a rotary drum magazine. Very few were ever made and none ever went into service with any force.

However, recently I did see an ad for an original Jackhammer in the United States, fully transferable. I forget the asking price, but I believe it was several tens of thousands of dollars. Definitely a collector, not a range piece (although personally I find it to be a travesty, owning a gun you can't shoot! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ).

I had a sheet here somewhere from Jane's Infantry Weapons that had some hard specs on this thing. I've gone through three drawers already and can't find it, so I'll head to the library today and see about getting another copy.

Just a question. If you run out of ammo for the JackHammer, can you take out the drum and put in another one? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Finally, was there any reason why it didn't go into service for the armed forces (or just for the spec ops units) eg. jamming, cost, weight etc? I'm pretty sure that the special forces would probably have at least one JackHammer lying around or one that they have played with, even if they don't use it in operations.

Sorry about the earlier question. Boy was that REALLY dumb! The JackHammer sounds like a fine weapon but if it was, why didn't it enter service? Did the weapon keep on jamming or what?
