Need advice on old hard drive in new system

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Hi everyone, I'm building a pc from the parts of 2 pcs. I'm going to take the hard drive out of my existing pc and put it in the newer of the 2 builds.

How should the HD react to being connected to a new mobo? Any tips on this.

If you have a Windows OS on the existing hard disk that you'd want to boot off on the new system, well, that won't work, assuming it's an OEM version of Windows (most likely), and thus it won't activate on your new system (Microsoft's definition of a new system is new mainboard).

Do you know the type of the hard disk?

With PATA, you have to be aware of the jumper setting if another drive is connected on the same cable (one is master, one is slave).

With SATA, just follow the numbers in sequence if there are several connectors; ie SATA1 (newer drive/primary), SATA2, SATA3, ....

the main issue you'll get is driver related, if you're building from scratch your best bet is to format the drive with a fresh install of Windows/Linux/BSD/etc.

As rejecht said you also need to make sure the connections on the motherboard and hard drive match be it IDE or SATA.
