I just got lightwave a few days ago and have been trying to learn it. This is not only my first weapon model, but my first model done in lightwave period. It has almost 500 pollys, but I will be putting in a little more detail.

What do you think? It is a hand held mini-gun, or assault cannon as it is known. DO NOT RAND ABOUT HOW IT IS NOT REALITIC!!!! IT IS NOT MENT TO BE!!!!

It is held with your right going under the shield and your hand grasping the handle thingy. I will import it into poser and do a quick render showing how it is ment to be held.

I still need to figure out how to make UV maps work so I can texture it... Anyone want to try??

If any on you play the table top game Warhammer 40k, you will notice that I modeled this after the assault cannon the Space Marine Terminators use. My brother plays the game, and it has some cool looking weapons (although very unrealisticly big)...It would make a cool mod. Anyone intorested?

Not to be picky, but that would be a very heavy gun to hold, though it looks awesome. The arm brace is very cool, but a pneumatic system running up the arm and bracing on both shoulders would really add to it (you know, like the squad automatics in aliens -- whatever they were called, smartguns I think)

MOJO!!!! JUST SHUT UP!!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif j/k

I agree, it would be VERY heavy, but to use it you are supposed to be wearing a big mechanical body that mackes you very strong. (Think mech that you wear)

Ya, I was thinking of somthing like that, but I just added the poser figure at the last moment to show off how it is held.

Here are some picts of the Warhammer model I took the idea from.

I could make the shield/arm brace fit snugly over the arm and make it smaller in general. mb shooting .22 at 100 rps? that could shred you up pretty bad /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
...but I like the big beefy look of it at the moment. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And you must admit, that is a good looking model when you thaink that this is my first modeling atempt ever in anything more sophisticated that Bryce 3d, and that I have only had the program for less than a week /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You know what Strangelove, you've inspired me to give modelling a try myself. So far, all I've gotten a chance to play with is a crappy stripped down warez version of 3d studio, I think I'll pick up Lightwave at my local pirate mall tomorrow.

And the best part about it is that it'll only cost me 5 US dollars.

Anyone ever heard of an old peice of software called PovRAY? It was a shareware 3D rendering program that I used a couple years back. Real primitive. Text-based interface. I made a ton of pictures with it (none of wich I had the foresight to save, unfortunately). I'm actually considering finding a career in 3D Modelling and Computer Animation.

Warning: lightwave 6 has some bugs, but if you are only paying $5.00, go for it. (might as well get Studio Max, Unless you are on a mac)

btw, if you are on a mac beware, it is a little buggy! If you have a Voodoo 3 card, you can't see that you have selected a point or polygon untill you change your view in some way. Also, you can't drag a box for some reason with your left mouse button to select lots of points or poyls, and you can't use the right mouse button to draw a lassoe around them. THese things can be worked around (and I dont even notice them anymore) but be forwarned.

Well, I "bought" Lightwave 5.6 and 3d studio max yesterday, I tried both for five minutes, and I decided to go with Lightwave.

After another few minutes of grumbling at it for its counter intuitive nature, I decided to get started on a pistol.

Here we go folks, my generic pistol:

Yes, I call it a generic pistol because I made it from memory, I was too lazy to dig up pictures on any particular gun.

Now if I could get a clue as to how to skin the mother.

How many polys you have in that? (press w for a run down of the parts in your model)

Is that all one object? (it it all welded together) or are many parts just places next to each other? and Do any of you know it the UT engine can handle more than 4 or 3 sided polygons? And, do the weapon models need to be in one piece? (see question above for derik) What sort of animation do I need to do to have it work in UT?

anything else I should know about modeling low poly modeels for UT?

Here's a quick render of a minigun I'm working on in Bryce 4. I know, I know, Bryce isn't good for this sort of stuff but I'm too impatient to learn something new /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Is it the learning something new? or paying $2500 for something better?

Oh yeah, here's my human-ish model.

Damn, I'm getting sort of uncomfortable with all this shameless pic posting.

Hehehe, I was trying to see if I could pull of the oh-so-hard to achieve "shoulder pad wearing, spandex laden brute" look.
