You have 2 fuses each of which takes exactly 1 hour to burn. These fuses are not uniform in there burning speeds, nor are they identicle. How can you use these two fuses to time off 45 minutes?
"non uniform'..???
Non uniform with what....themselves or each other. Does each fuse by itself burn steadily?
If so, then fold one in half (twist it tightly together)and lay it in a cross "+" postion over the other at the exact midway points of both fuses.
Light one of the ends (any end)..when the fuse burn reaches the middle of the cross and then finishes off one of the 90 degree angles it should be 45 min.
If each fuse is intermittent in its own burning speed then I havent a clue.
They are each intermittant in there burning speeds. The idea of folding it is kind of on the right track. What you have to do is light one of them at both ends, and at the same time light one end of the second one. After 30 minutes the first one will completely burn up, and the second one will have 30 minutes left. Now light the other end of the second one, and it will be completely burned in 15 minutes, making a total of 45.
Ahhh-ha! Damm...I almost had it..I tried 3 different scenarios with lighting one at both ends to get you the 30 min...but couldnt jive out the 2nd part to an exact formula....heehee..thats prety neat
