I've just purchased 3D Studio Max 2.5 (damn, this thing is expensive)
Could anybody give me a little advice how to start things etc.

I'm looking forward to model some weapons /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Neo, first of all, I am not an advocate of purchasing software, especially packages such as 3D studio max which is incredibly over priced. Anyway thats my rant.

Umm best way to get started would be if you know anyone who has done it before, just watch them do it. If not, go to 3D cafe, I think its called, there are tutorials there, not sure if there is any for begginers, but have a look.

I picked it up real quick cause I had been using UnrealED for about 9 months. It is a fairly simple program you just need to get your head around the basics.

So you wanna be a modeler huh?? /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It can be easy to pick up or a pain in the arse depending on your abilities. Pricey? HELL yes it is.. I just got 3D Studio Max 3-- awesome update from 2.5 anyway. www.3dcafe.com is a great site with tutorials, examples, plenty of pics, etc. I also have a couple tutorials on my dusted-over, cob webbed modeling website- www.catalyticconversions.com/modelshop
The news is quite old, but hey- I'll get around to it at some point..

Speaking of models, just an update on 3.0- I've just finished 3 new weapons, the H&K G11, M4A1, and the H&K Mk23 SOCOM. The G11 has a bayonet and scope attachment, the SOCOM has a silencer, laser, and flashlight attachment, and the M4A1 looks like something out of Star Wars when fully loaded! It sports a scope, iron sights, laser, flashlight, and the M203 grenade launcher. The next weapon I'll be working on is the FN P90, after which I'll post pics of these weapons on our website. The models are a great improvement over current Infiltration weapons. stay tuned!

OK, I have to ask .... on the v3 of 3D Studio Max, did you get the Character Studio? If you did, is it useful? I have both coming in next week, and I am curios as to its functionality.

If I want to upgrade 2.5 to 3, do I need to buy a new version or can I get the upgrade somewhere?

And Warren:
I'm too curious. Could you send me some screens?

More and better weapon models in v3? Would it tear the mod apart with expansion packs?

To make THE maps, you need to have a modeler nearby if not inside. Have you taken a look at the outdoor Unreal maps (sure you have). It isn't because it looks hard to make, it is rather that it need to be done.

Warrens modelshop:
Is it possible to make gasmasks and gas-grenades available, not smoke just gas? It would also be nice to have contaminated and/or gas zones.

Please excuse my slightly off topic response.

Character Studio is a great program- depending on what you're doing. If you are big into animations and the like, especially organic in sytle, CS is where it's at. It's pretty easy to learn and can seriously give a real life feel to your anims. On the other hand, if all you want are static models than I wouldn't even bother with 3D Max for the price it is. I personally use it all the time, from first person animations to the upcoming character models.

Gas period will depend. We messed with something similiar with Force Recon, which was kinda cool- except the smoke effect was hard on slower systems. I dunno how UT will handle this, so we'll have to wait and see. As far as a chemical agent in the air which can be invisible and just as deadly, that's possible too. The problem is, if we incorporate it into our loadout system (being able to buy chem weapons) then the opposing team may not know this, and frankly there ain't no way you can walk into a chemically contaminated area and live without protection- so it'd be in a way unfair. If we can figure out simple and/or effective way to do this, we may include it in 3.0 or a later version.

Have a gas alarm that goes off as you near a contaminated zone...
