Incidentally, the Russians are the only ones to field an active countermeasures system to date...as usual, they're way ahead of everyone else.

Except the Russians have no funding left for proper testing/design of these weapon systems and is selling everything to the highest bidder.

Sure, there are some good weapon designs by them. But without or proper training and maintenance of them, they are simply not up to scratch.

Anyone else surprised that these copy and paste wars has gone on for so long?

i don't know where you get that nonsence from but russian arms industry is booming, the russian STATE is low on cash, but the russian arms industry does not suffer from those problems since they are mainly stand alone industries.

Indeed. It's perhaps the only bright spot in the entire Russian economy.

The Mafia isn't that bright. Not in the sense of being a positive thing, anyway.

If that's the case...how come decent projects like the MiG 1.44 had to be scrapped due to financial constraints IIRC?

because in any business, sometimes new ideas are just too expensive.
although the industry may be somewhat seperated from the states troubles, they got their own bills to pay.

    1. the v-22 is bound to pay back every cent spent in design.
    2. its costly, but not the most expensive toy weve spent taxpayer dollars on.
    3. We got more money to invest ;)

    if you ask me:
making a new plane with a trademark name commonly used in the phrase "....was shot down by two american f-15's earlier today" isint a wise investment :p

I wouldent put money on a mig either

Mikoyan was always much more dependent on the government for funds; those dried up, so the MiG 1.44 went kaput. Sukhoi is more or less self-financing through its own export sales of the Su-27 series, so its' advanced fighter project, the S-37 Berkut, is still proceeding nicely. The Berkut should be able to give the F-22 one hell of a fight -- both are stealth; the F-22 has better radar and jammers, but the Berkut's maneuverability is massively superior and it has better air-to-air missiles.

also there are plans for some sort of plasma stealth generator (which as a side effect further decreases drag and increases maneuverability and top speed) though wether that will be used we'll just have to see.

    1. There are PLENTY of examples of VERY expensive development programs that LOOKED totally revolutionary but proved totally USELESS. Ever heard of the XFV-1 Pogo Stick or the XF2Y Sea Dart? Like the V-22, they were promising concepts that had a LOT of highly innovative technology in them, but ultimately proved to be nothing but a huge waste of money. At least the V-22's in good company...I rather LIKE the Sea Dart.

    2. See below. I expect results for my money, not technological masterpieces that are nonetheless useless!

    3. Only a KID who doesn't pay taxes could possibly utter such a statement.
