Ok maybe Inf isnt ready for Metal Storm but it is still a cool concept :D

"To the human ear, the sound of 180 bullets being fired in less than one-hundredth of a second is perceived as one enormous noise."

Applying what he had learned about tube loading and firing rates, O'Dwyer constructed a triple-barrel, a nine-barrel, and a 36-barrel firing prototype design that he lovingly named Bertha. "The reason for the 36 barrels was simply to indicate to ourselves and to others the future versatility of this system, in that with the 36 barrels we had 540 rounds on board and, based on the 45,000-round-per-minute rate per barrel, that gave us a maximum firing rate of 1.62 million rounds per minute," the inventor says. Prior to Bertha's well-deserved retirement, O'Dwyer used the demonstrator to achieve a 180-round burst of 9mm rounds (155 grain weight) at a rate of just over 1 million rounds per minute.

I find it somehow fitting that it was Imperial that suggested this, since it was I who suggested it first, a few months back.

The website is www.metalstorm.com and I was just joking about adding this but it is pretty revolutionary
Here is the 36 barrel gun
    [IMG]
And this gun is able to shoot 40mm grenades at a rate of 20,000 a minute!

What use is firing something that fast?

The only use I could think of would be air defense or a ground component of the Star Wars defense system.

the idea is not to fire all projectiles at once everytime. 2ms bursts with 2 projectiles give the first round a higher speed (1,5x) -> more power
those big pods are capable to pierce battle tanks without special ammo, the big amount of bullets coming with 2ms delay penetrates nearly everything.
and besides that it is also made against infantry so it is a very general weapon system

    Taken care of ;)
the ammo comes in long tubes that can be slipped into the weapons breach from behind.

Metal storms not just selling the stacked bullets setup, but also the other bits I find more interesting.
like electronic triggers that can only be used by one operator, multiple ammo types in the same barrel, and the nautral idiot proof design made possible by the fact theres no moving parts in the entire device.

    then theres the accuracy thing.
from what I understand through the video on their site, the heat from a bullet firing swells the one behind, making it fit the barrel tightly.
also (as a few of us from the semi vs bolt action sniper rifle arguments might guess) no moving parts means even greater accuracy.
then theres the fact you can fire a three shot group before you feel the recoil (hence, befor it affects the snipers aim) ;)

The first hand pistols are supposed to be going into production soon, so time will tell weather it works out or not.

I thought the portable "mine field" idea was pretty interesting (basically a lot of MS batteries set up at the location, with automated targeting/image analysis)

then you might like the "fireant" system ;)
basically an anti tank mine, bolted to the top of an atv with an auto pilot.
it roams the battlefield looking for a target, then finds one and goes *boom* in its face.

RAZZ, when bullet goes through gun's barrel, it deforms to fit the rifling. Normally, gas pressure takes care of doing that. With a "metal storm" type weapon, however, you have to force bullets into a rifled barrel deforming them by hand, which means factory reloading ONLY, which means disposable barrels which means a lot of weight. Also, such tubular magazines will be EXTREMELY bulky for their ammo capacity - an equivalent of a STANAG magazine for equivalent of 5.56x45mm ammo will me over TWO METERS long.

Also, if you want to loose a cloud of bullets from a handgun, you'll be looking at your own wrist stuck to wall behind you... and no longer attached to your arm.

The point of the ultra high ROF burst is that the whole burst is out before you feel the recoil, as with the G11.

Yes, but that recoil doesn't go nowhere, only delayed - sure, you got those bullets out, all well and good, and THEN the brick wall hits you.

Oh, and all that stuff about multiple bullets pushing each other and/or hitting the same spot is beyound laughable. You want more muzzle energy, load more powder. And if you think 2 bullets fired from different lenght barrels are going to hit the same spot, you're in for a very rude awakening.

Metal Storm type weapons have their uses, but definitely not in handguns. Only place I see for them is close range anti-missile defense on ships and perhaps ground vehicles - replace the gatlings in Phalanx system and such.

And, I anticipate someone posting "oh, but there's this thin metal tube rifled on the inside which you slide into a barrel strong enough to withstand gas pressure", and in advance tell you to shop for a pneumatic hammer, because that's what it will take to get this thin metal tube out of barrel after gas pressure and thermal expansion glue it in.

Which is why you limit yourself to a two or three round burst.

Maybe we could have that fully adjustable...n00bs who select a full 30-rds ultra-burst would get their arms broken by the recoil. :D

And what is the point then? You can achieve the same thing with a conventional bolt setup + recoil compensation frame (G11, AN-94) and retain the easy reloading, large capacity magazine, and high accuracy. Keep in mind that recoil of a 3-round burst of 9mm equivalent fired out of a pistol sized gun would still be somewhat similar to a mule kicking you in the wrist.
