I don't know about you guys, but one of the things I've loved most about this series is the wide variety of maps and the environments they take place in. I'd like to see a return to some wild venues that don't really make logical sense, yet fit perfectly in the Unreal universe. I think UT99 and UT2k4 did a good job of this, maybe UT3 to a lesser extent.

It could be atop buildings miles high, on a space rock with no atmosphere, or in the mouth of a freakin' volcano. The more surreal the environment is, the better IMO.

I'm curious what others out there in the community like. Do you pay much attention to these sort of things?

The competitive community doesn't usually like gimmicky maps, but I think gimmicky maps are ones that draw in people a lot of the time. Morpheus and Fractal and Pressure are really iconic maps that have really strong concepts to latch onto.

I have a cool idea for a map that I'd like to bring to the new UT but I'm not going to spoil it before I even start it.

Fractal? No wonder, it's just Morbias with a trap added. Morbias was good as it was due to its simplicity and with the trap at the center it only got better.

I liked the industrial types like Deck 16, Sprinta, Hydro 16. As well as your futuristic/space ones like Facing Worlds, Orbital, or if we're discussing Unreal 1 settings, the Skaarj environments.

One environment that I liked that wasn't as prominent in 2k4 was your old world Nali type settings. Old monasteries, temples, villages, etc.

"Gimmicky" maps could be fun too. The unlikely/impossible settings added diversity, PROVIDED they have good gameplay. Facing Worlds I would count in the gimmicky group.

However, what I did not care for at all was the Egyptian themed maps. It just does not fit in the Unreal setting/universe.
