Ever since I've tried (and enjoyed) infiltration, I was unhappy to find my favourite gun (M-16) to be unable to fire in automatic mode. When I played rainbow six, the M-16 was fully automatic. But the (cool) infiltration team could be right, I played R6: rogue spear and the m-16 was not automatic. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON??
This is my question... is the M-16 automatic, or not? Thank you, I apologise if I was a bit rude.

Well, I went to do the research for you but the Colt (people who make the M16) site is down, check it out when it comes back online on the 14th of Nov.

I think I remember Warren or Cat saying that the M16 doesn't have full auto, at least some of them don't, ammo conservation or some bollocks.

RaekwoN out. Oh btw read the roadmap on the InF website too, if you intend on hanging around the forum for long.

The M16 doesn't have full auto, only burst. That's why they made the M4 Carbine, the automatic version of the m16.

The M16A1 does have full auto, but we're using the M16A2 which is a post-Vietnam era weapon without full auto. In version 3, for a higher price you can get the M4A1 which has full auto.. as well as tons of accessories which the M16 won't have all of..

The reason that the m16 does not have full auto is durring viatnam, the solders would panic and just hold down the trigger hitting nothing (most of the time) and wasteing lots and lots of ammo.
I believe.

Loki,
That's just one of a buttload of reasons that the DOD decided to go with the three round burst. Others include improved accuracy due to shorter recoil impulse and a more efficient usage of ammunition. Incidentally, when the M16A2 was created and issued, a brand new and improved loading of the 5.56mm round had just been issued. The 5.56 NATO loading's bullet massed about 10% more than the old M193 US ammunition and was optimized for a 1 in 7 rifling twist. These two factors extended the practical engagement range by creating a flatter shooting weapon.
The other improvements on the A2 were a barrel that was thickened halfway down to reduce climb, the aforementioned Rifling, improved adjustable rear sights, reshaped pistol grip, nylon filled stock, and a flash suppressor that now functions as a useable muzzle brake.
If you want all those improvements and still want full auto, join the Canadian Army. Canada adopted it with full auto as the C7 I believe.

Warren, if you wanted to get truely specific, you could include the H-BAR version which, though unable to mount the 203 system due to the thickness of the base of the barrel, uses the extra weight to help hold down muzzle climb.
