Here's a video of the map I'm currently working on. A cave-themed map for Killing Floor, UnrealEngine 2.5:

I would appreciate some comments. :)

EDIT: More screenshots and stuff below.

    EDIT2:
    01/28/12: v2 is out!

    Download KF-Cave-v2 from Rapidshare
    Download KF-Cave-v2 from Mediafire

    added sounds
fixed exploits around the archeologist's table
fixed invisible hole in the ground outside
cut off some rocks and made other areas slightly easier to traverse

Some feedback on this version, mostly concerning exploits, would be nice. If I don't get anything I'm going to submit this for whitelisting.

Looks really good. Visuals remind me a lot of Hourences' DM-Sae or Mango's (?) DM-Antediluvian. Curious to learn more about your modeling workflow for the caves.

One thing I'm a little concerned about is the dead ends that I saw, and the narrowness of some of the passages. Usually good to have some small holes in the ceiling or walls for stalkers and crawlers to come out of, at least, otherwise all the zeds come in through one choke and get slaughtered.

This is the corridor connecting the inside of the cave with the outside. Adding this short section makes it easier for me to zone off the areas and prevent lines of sight from the outside to the inside so culling is more efficient. Plus, I think it looks good.

And these show the small outside area:

    Really looking great :D

Like everything you've made :) It's even more impressive when you consider the map is made with that dino engine ! It would look stunning on UT3 & amazing on UDK !

    Thanks. :)

    Well spotted. :)
I followed Hourences' DM-Sae tutorial, like Mango did. That explains the similar looks.

The basic workflow for modeling the caves is pretty much like in the tutorial, although I used different programs.

Decoration is obviously different, but one key thing I added is projectors that add patches of different textures to the map. VertexColors only allow two colors and thus two textures per model but with the projected patches I can have roots, dirt, different gravel and moss types in the map.
The next step was to add some kind of 3d representation of these patches, like the thin roots that stick out from the root patches, the big roots that broke up the ground to create the rougher gravel, small stones with moss on them, water puddles that made the ground below more fertile...

The last thing I did was add some man-made things, like burning coal basins, an archeologist's table, the creepy furniture in the flooded room, torches...

That's pretty much it for the cave itself. I had a couple of openings in it. Most of them as a kind of window to the outside world, and to get that across I added plants around them. I wanted some to hang inside to get a bit of interaction between the outside and the inside going so it feels more organic. To that effect water drops in from big leafs, lightbeams come in from the outside, the vines hang in...
I'm thinking of adding sand emitters to two places. Not sure yet.

Two of the openings were meant as actual, traversable exits to another kind of environment. When I started out I wasn't sure what that was going to look like, but it was supposed an additional loop in the layout. Ideas were the basement of an abandoned factory, with the exits as holes in the walls, a narrow cliff-path or a beach. I stumbled across a picture of the entrance of the river Styx into the Mammoth Cave and decided I wanted to incorporate a small-scale version of that.

Added the stairway to force the players to walk around there to make them look at the big cave entrance and finally connected the cave exits with the cave entrances with the corridors you can see in the screenshot.

Now all I have left to do is add tradery things inside the three trader rooms and finish the menial tasks of blocking off everything exploitable and making sure the ZEDs don't get stuck and then I'm pretty much done.:)

I hope that's what's going to make the map challenging. It's hard to even run past zombies because the cave is so narrow in places.
It works for BioticsLab, I hope it'll work here.

Two of the roomy looking dead ends are going to be trader rooms, one has a sinkhole in the ceiling so ZEDs can drop in from behind/above and one dead end room I'm going to keep unless I have to change it because it's exploitable. In test-runs I did I died though. I'll have to wait and see what the whitelist-test group thinks about it.

Going to download and give it a good run-through to find any kinks (later today). Will take screenshots and highlight the areas that cause issues.

Holy crap! What sort of voodoo are you using to build that map? That's the best looking KF map I've seen.
