Let us revive the hope for a JALP! Any one on these forums who would be willing to help spread the word for a worthy cause unite! Let use disperse the knowledge over many UT forums in the hope there will be interest! Do what you can, where you can, and when you can to do good!

Edit: sorry for reviving the long dead topic, but I feel it must be said.

having a JALP is not out of the question. Its simply a matter of finding a few players who would be willing to help organize one and can get a place to hold it. A plane flight within the US can be 100 bucks as opposed to $700-$800 for a trans-atlantic flight and it is almost as cheap as a 300 mile drive if you go alone. Plus its easier to bring a computer along distance that way (NO CUSTOMS!). Or if one wants to go even cheaper one may be able to take the train, but it will be slower. IIRC, if there is a Midwest location, Americans on the coasts can travel the same distance to attend a JALP as a some of the JELP regulars travel to attend a JELP. Actually I know many people might be willing to drive for a day or two to a LAN if they think it will be good and fairly cheap so the idea that everyone will fly is may not be the case as long as people get one organized and news gets out early enough.

So you think airline companies will give us half price so as to make the perceived price the same? Heck no, they would rather double it relative to other countries, especially now when many American airlines are in bankruptcy for the most part as a result of American competition, so foreign travel is going to be, for them, a saving grace, and therefore their ace in the hole. It might actually be cheaper to you fly here with your stuff, then for Americans to do the equivalent and go to Europe at any given time, especially with the political mood as it is, although how foreigners are treated now on both sides of the Atlantic gives me some concern. The problem with a JALP is probably going to be finding and alerting the community, not having a community. Plans can only go so far, if no one can implement them or there isn't much interest due to lack of knowledge. Maybe a news update to guage interest would help. I notice the talk of a JELP brings up talk of a JALP to some degree, so tapping that might be enough.

Edit: Actually the airline prices are about equal, but still a ticket costs about $1000 or about 700 Euros round trip. If the current exchange rate is about 1.4 Dollars to a Euro, they are actually about equal or if less than that, higher on our end, possibly due to sales taxes and all attendent levies countries impose.

It doesn't work like that TB, the exchange rates pretty much account for everything, at least that's the way it's supposed to work. Theoretically it costs me as much to buy a particular item as it does for someone in the UK to buy something similar. In pratice I think the exchange rate for the US dollar is a bit skewed right now, I'm not entirely sure why. Travelling to Europe at the moment is an exercise in overpaying excessively for everything, at least that was my experience when I went to the UK before. When I worked out the dollar cost of things I was buying I wanted to choke sometimes. For instance, I think new CDs cost about $18 or so, I can get the same here for $13. Cost-of-living is probably supposed to account for that (I pay less taxes so I earn more money for the same labor, at least theoretically), but it was still quite painful.
