I'm making my second level (it's pretty poor) and I need some tips on item placement for a pretty small level (weapons, health, other pickups, etc.).

Thanks...

In order to help you better I should see your level... but you can do it if you think of the item placement in proportion of where and what kind of foes you have in your level (in case it is a SP map if it's a DM map look at your map distribution and place the weapons/goodies to the equal (sort of) distance from your Player Starts, so every palayer/bot has the same chances of getting a good/better weapon. Also in DM maps have in count where in the most of cases the action and scaramuch will/would take place, so you can put more ammo/health in the surroundings... There are lots of criteria to place items in a map, but make them accesible so you can have the most out of it.

That depends on what you have in mind to take place into your map... for instance, if you want to have a very good DM expirience, then you shuold the heavy fire power restricted so all the players would be combating for a long time before getting fraged (at least I think so) the more time you stay alive the more fun, dontcha think?. If it is a SP map, have in mind the pawns in the level (don't expect to kill a Titan with an Atomag, a Stinger maybe, but not an Automag...), get the idea?

(By the way, it is a DM map for UT.)

OK, so I put the good weapons in hard to reach/hidden places. How about tips on how to place weapons (eg on its side, rotating, not rotating, etc.).

That is mainly a matter of balance between taste and power... For example if you have a machine that can easely run UT at a high res and with all turned on, then consider that not everyone has one, so I'd suggest putting the weapons steady so a great variety of players cand run your map /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif
